To really be successful with ads you need to test out your ads before you spend lots of money on them. I would say put a pretty low amount of money on a bunch of different looking ads, see which one gets good analytics, and then advertise that one with a lot of money.

I couldn't agree more. I noticed that after I put story highlights on my account, my followback ratios went way up! I guess people really respond to the visual stimuli. Also make sure that all the story covers match eachother and have the same aesthetic as your profile pic and as your whole account.
