My traffic increased without gaining many new rankings

I recently noticed that some pages were getting noticeably more traffic even though their average keyword positions had barely changed. It made me look beyond rankings and pay more attention to the actual SERP and click-through rate. Has anyone else noticed the same thing lately?
yes, this is vey true imo. there may be cases where your page may get more long tail keyword or higher click through rates even if you have dropped a little from your position on the main keyword.

I'm still new to SEO, so I always thought ranking higher was the main thing. Looks like there's a lot more to it than I expected. Still figuring it all out!

Yep, average position doesn't tell the whole story. SERP features, AI Overviews, and changes in search intent can affect clicks even when rankings stay stable. I always compare GSC clicks, impressions, and CTR at the query level before assuming rankings are the problem.

I guess you should check your AI visibility audit. I think most of the time this is where you get to find out if you are getting referral traffic, because most of the time increasing traffic is synonymous with your keywords ranking higher or you probably getting more keywords in search engines. In this situation I'm thinking this is going to be a referral traffic case

fwiw...gonna echo this with the more recent changes...prob more ai overviews popping up and/or starting to rank for a lot more long/conversational (and perhaps also short) tail kw than your actually directly tracking, assuming you have the topical authority etc...makes sense.

and/or serp landscape changing and starting to show more youtube vids or (insert current popular parasite here) that you have out there

i have always thought that average position can be a little deceiving on its own. one page can get some extra clicks through a couple of long tail search phrases without any movement in its primary keyword position.is that the case for severral pages or only for one particular page?

Sometimes Google shows your page for more search terms, even when its main keyword rankings stay the same.

happened on one of my blogs too. turned out the page started showing for a bunch of long tail queries i never targeted — average position looked the same because gsc averages everything together lol
Haha yeah, sometimes site-wide stats can be misleading. I always analye the query level stats and use clicks/impressions for a 28-day period to find out about long tail wins.
