Has anyone bought an expired domain with high quality links and redirected to a different site within the past year?
What is the result?

It's been a little while I did anything with expired domains and domain redirection. I've been hearing a little chatter here and there that these redirects are dead.

Are they truly dead from your recent experiments?

I did this with one of my big domains. I redirected it to a different domain, and at the start, everything looked good. But after about a month, the new domain was basically dead, so I moved everything back to the old domain. The old domain is now back to full power, but the new one is dead.

So, using the redirect tool in Google Search Console gave me bad results in my experience.

what I'm specifically asking about is redirecting the entire domain to a page on another site.

I wouldn’t redirect the whole expired domain to one page unless everything on that domain was very closely related

If the old URLs had different topics, sending all of them to the same page can just look like irrelevant redirects and Google may ignore a lot of the value

Better to redirect the strongest relevant URLs to the closest matching pages. If there’s no good match for some of them, I wouldn’t force the redirect just for the sake of it

I dont think 301 redirects are dead. They still work well when you are moving a website or changing urls.

What seems less effective is buying an expired domain just for its backlinks and redirecting it to an unrelated website. Google can ignore those old signals if the new site doesnt match the old one.So I would say 301s are still useful for seo, but using them just to pass link value from expired domains is much less reliable now.

I wouldn’t call them completely dead, but I’d be much more selective now.. Until unless needed don't do it, i wont recommend it

I’ve seen expired domain redirects still work but the results seem much more dependent on topical relevance and link quality than before.

Random domains with unrelated backlinks can lose their value quickly so I’d test carefully rather than call redirects completely dead.

The double redirect tactic was in play in the first half of this year, especially with people hit by the HCU. I much prefer building out expired domains rather than redirecting them - you can still use the link equity if needed by just linking to the site you were going to redirect the domain to.

Yup. Rebuilding still works so much better than 301s rn.

We currently do all rebuilds with codex/claude while preserving entity and topical graph. Then let it index fully. Then push the top RDs through an indexer (still using the one you recommended via PM, thanks again!) and send some frehs signals to the tier1 links (mostly sape + maybe microworkers) - but only for a week or so. Then we link out.

i loooove codex.

i did try with one expired domain that i purchased, the domain had a backlink from Entreprenur ..com, so far after about 1-2 weeks i have seen an increase in ranking for my site, about 4-5 positions increase, hopefully it keeps going, nothing changed on the DR side tho strangly enough

Change in DR doesn't matter, what matters is the ranking and traffic.

So, you did the same exact thing I talked about? That is redirecting entire domain to a page?

I am thinking about this too. Some redirects work fine, but others can cause rankings to drop. Has anyone recently used a redirect and managed to keep their traffic stable?

redirects are completely not dead but results much less predictable now. history and relevance of the old domain matter a lot more than just having strong links.

Google still supports 301s for legitimate site moves and says permanent redirects can transfer PageRank.

Not dead, but much less reliable. A clean, relevant expired domain with real links can still pass value through a 301, but random redirects often do nothing.

It is not dead, however, much less reliable. The importance of relevance, clean history, and topical continuity outweighs that of DR and backlink quantity.
