H1 2026 Sitrep: January to June recap

The first six months of 2026 have been some of the most volatile in SEO history. We saw three confirmed Google algorithm updates, two unannounced SERP tremors, and the most aggressive rollout of AI Search features in recent times.

January 2026: AI Overviews Expand & Rise of GEO
  • Zero-click search pandemic: Google heavily expanded AI Overviews (AIO) across informational queries, grabbing top-of-SERP real estate. Zero-click searches surged as AI answered basic "how-to" and "best X for Y" queries directly in the SERP.
  • Rise of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Google expands the integration of AI. Forcing AI models to cite your sites as entities officially became a priority over traditional organic link building.
  • Discover updates: Unannounced updates to Google Discover began rolling out, heavily penalizing syndication networks and scraped listicles.
February 2026: Discover Core Update & Continuous Tremors
  • Discover Core Update: Google officially confirmed the February 2026 Discover Core Update, refining engagement and user interest signals. Sites relying on clickbait titles, automated web stories, and recycled news got wiped from the Discover feed.
  • Silent tremors: Massive multi-day volatility spikes were recorded on Semrush sensor and trackers.

March 2026: The 24-Hour Spam Purge & The Broad Core Update
  • Spam Update: Google launched the March 2026 spam update, which rolled out and completed in just 24 hours globally (March 24-25). The spam update targeted scaled AI-generated content networks, expired domain manipulation, and programmatic SEO (pSEO) builds. SpamBrain got a major upgrade.
  • March 2026 Core Update: Google launched the March 2026 core update, triggering massive ranking shifts (roughly 80% of top-three results shifted across tracked informational queries). The Core Update heavily favored "big brands," destination domains, and institutional sites. The comparison blogs and thin affiliate sites lost their rankings.
  • Parasite SEO Hit: Google heavily targeted parasite SEO. Sub-folders and sponsored posts on educational (.edu) and high authority news sites started losing their rankings as Google devalued 3rd-party host manipulation.

April 2026: Ads Platform AI Integration & Parasite Fallout
  • Paid ads invade AI answers: Google Ads began testing and integrating Gemini-powered conversational ad formats directly into AI Search experiences.
  • Parasite Fallout: Persistent devaluations for parasites without tiered social signals and real user engagement metrics.

May 2026: Google I/O Overhaul & The May Broad Core Update
  • Google I/O: Google announced its biggest search engine redesign in 25 years, making "AI Mode" and agentic search assistants the default framework. AI search is no longer just a "snippet" at the top; it is becoming the underlying operating system of Google Search.
  • May Core Update: Google May 2026 core update targeted niche sites with templated layouts, translated AI content, and sites that survived earlier updates by hiding behind high domain authority without offering unique E-E-A-T signals.

June 2026: Final Tremors, June Spam Purge & AI Performance Tools

SERP Sitrep: H1 July recap

1. Fake DMCA Takedowns in Google Search
Google's feature to request takedown of content that infringes copyright was heavily abused and turned into a negative SEO nightmare. Fradulent DMCA takedowns are weaponised by many people to get rid of competition.

2. The AI Referral Shakeup: ChatGPT Takes 92%, Claude Beats Perplexity
A massive data study published in early July (analyzing 6.77 million LLM sessions across 166 sites) revealed that ChatGPT now commands 92.4% of all AI referral traffic. Claude quietly overtook Perplexity in AI referral traffic, growing 64x over the past year, while Perplexity referrals dropped 61% from their peak and Microsoft Copilot collapsed by 96%.

ChatGPT sends 28.8% of its referral clicks to a domain's internal site search page rather than the specific deep link answering the query. Make sure your internal search results page is optimized for conversions, loads quickly, and doesn't return "0 results found" for common AI-queried terms.

3. AI Performance Insights in Google Merchant Center
Google officially rolled out AI Performance Insights in Google Merchant Center, allowing e-commerce owners to see impressions and clicks specifically from AI Mode and AI Overviews. E-commerce affiliates and drop-shippers can finally see if AI Overviews are stealing or driving product clicks.

4. Bing AI Performance Reports
Bing Webmaster Tools backfilled historical data into its new AI Performance Reports, giving SEOs clearer attribution on where Copilot and Bing chat pull citations.

5. Google Search Console Shows Performance Reports for Social Media Properties
GSC added a new feature called platform properties that allows users to add their Instagram, Tiktok, X, and YouTube properties and track their impressions & clicks on Google search.

6. Cloudflare Introduced New Rule to Block Googlebot from Scraping Content for AI Training
Cloudflare introduced new AI Crawler Rules that now allow webmasters to block Googlebot specifically from scraping content for AI training, while still allowing indexing.

7. Google Ignores Cloudflare’s New Directive
Google's John Mueller officially confirmed that Google ignores Cloudflare’s new "Content Signals" robots.txt directive. If you want to control Google's AI crawling, you must use standard Google-specific user-agent blocks. If you are running PBNs and using Cloudflare's one-click "block AI" switches, Google is ignoring your signals unless you manually configure your 'robots.txt' for 'Google-Extended'.

8. OpenAI User-Agent Can Now Update Dynamically to Bypass Blocklists
OpenAI updated its crawler protocols, noting its user-agent strings can now update dynamically to bypass legacy static IP/user-agent blocklists. OpenAI scraping bots are getting harder to block with static rules. If you are scraping or protecting content from AI bots, you need dynamic behavioral bot protection, not just user-agent filtering.

9. Google Kills Cached AMP Pages
Google Search officially stopped serving Google-hosted/cached AMP pages to users. All mobile searchers clicking an AMP result are now sent directly to the publisher's domain-hosted AMP URL.

10. ChatGPT Ads Manager Rapid Expansion
Throughout the second week of July, OpenAI rolled out massive updates to ChatGPT Ads, introducing custom audience lists, attributed sales value, ROAS tracking, and suggested ad drafts. Google Ads countered by expanding mandatory AI ad disclosures across Search, YouTube, and Discover.

SEO News & Updates

1. The "7-Eleven" Unannounced Tremors
The tracking tools (Semrush Sensor, Algoroo) and forum chatter confirm that the heavy, unannounced ranking volatility that spiked around July 11 has not subsided. Google has not officially confirmed a core update, but localized rankings, affiliate comparison tables, and secondary informational terms are dancing wildly across US and EU SERPs.

2. Google AI Mode: Ads Reaching 30% & New App Integrations
Google AI Mode ads are now appearing on nearly 30% of all conversational AI search queries. Google formally integrated 3rd-party apps - including Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music directly into the AI Mode interface, allowing users to execute tasks without visiting standard external websites.

3. Image Search Overhaul: Clean Search Box Dropped
Google Image Search quietly dropped its traditional clean search box layout, replacing the interface with an immediate visual "gallery of images" and AI-driven exploratory filter pills. AI recognition bots are now crawling image EXIF data, original visual formatting, and schema to decide if a site has real E-E-A-T.

4. Google AI Overviews can now generate AI images
Google integrated their latest nano banana model in AI overviews to directly generate AI images based on user's questions.

5. Google's John Mueller on Quality Issues & AI-Generated Content
Google's John Mueller told in a recent podcast that "crawled/discovered - currently not indexed" errors on GSC are not technical errors but quality issues.

SEO News & Updates

1. The July 18–19 Weekend Ranking Tremor
3rd-party tracking tools and forum monitoring confirmed yet another unconfirmed Google search ranking spike over the weekend of July 18th and 19th. Don't buy into Google's PR claim that AI Overviews are distributing "billions of clicks" equally. The data shows those clicks are heavily consolidated into top-tier brand citations and internal search hubs. If you are seeing ranking bounces on niche sites, hold off on link disavows or content overhauls until the algorithm settles.

2. John Mueller Says "NO" to Stripped-Down AI Website Versions
A major trend in H1 2026 has been webmasters creating a secondary, plain-text "AI-only" version of their websites (often leveraging '/llms.txt' or markdown directories) specifically for ChatGPT and AI crawlers to read. Google’s Search Advocate, John Mueller, explicitly pushed back against this practice, stating that building separate AI-only website versions is a waste of resources. He confirmed that a well-structured standard HTML website works seamlessly for users, Googlebot, and AI scrapers alike.

3. Technical Alert: Google Warns Against Corner AI Image Labels
Google updated its official documentation on AI content labeling (first introduced on July 9) with a specific rule: when webmasters add self-disclosed AI labels or watermarks to image assets, "do not place those labels in the very corners of the image".

4. E-Commerce Warning: Do Not Reinstall Google/YouTube Shopify App
As Google prepares to sunset the Content API for Shopping on August 18 (replacing it with the new Merchant API), an urgent warning was issued to Shopify store owners: "Do not uninstall and reinstall the Google & YouTube Shopify app" to try to force the API update.

SEO News & Updates
1. Google Search Upgrades Core AI to "Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite"
On July 22, Google officially confirmed on its company news blog that Google Search has transitioned to using its newest model: Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. This lightweight, ultra-fast model is now actively powering agentic search experiences, real-time background queries, AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.
Why does a model switch matter for us? Because "Flash-Lite" models are optimized for raw token speed and lower inference latency, meaning Google can now afford to trigger AI Overviews on a significantly higher percentage of long-tail and transactional search terms without burning server costs.

2. Google Loses DMCA Scraping Case Against SerpApi
A landmark legal ruling came down on July 22: Google lost its key DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) claims against SerpApi in an ongoing scraping lawsuit. Google had attempted to use anti-circumvention copyright law to stop automated rank trackers and data tools from scraping public search engine result pages (SERPs). The court rejected Google's core DMCA arguments.
This is a massive legal victory for the SEO tool industry, rank trackers, and anyone running custom SERP scrapers or automated keyword arbitrage bots.

3. Google Updates Crawl Budget Docs to "Conservative" Default
On July 22, Google pushed a notable update to its official Crawl Budget documentation. Google explicitly clarified that every website on the web starts on a "Conservative Crawl" rate by default. Googlebot will not scale up crawling capacity or hit server limits until a site demonstrates sustained server health, structural efficiency, and consistent E-E-A-T signals.

4. $50K Ad Spend Barrier Removed for Lead Forms
Google officially dropped the mandatory $50,000 historical ad spend requirement previously needed to run inline Lead Form ad assets.
The removal of the $50k spend threshold is a huge win for media buyers, local lead-gen marketers, and threshold account testers. You can now launch native SERP lead-capture forms on fresh ad accounts without waiting months to clear spend barriers.

5. Paid Traffic: Q2 Ad Surge
Google reported a record-breaking Q2 2026, with search ad revenue jumping 14.5% to $81.6 billion, proving ad monetization inside AI SERPs is scaling rapidly.
A 14.5% surge in search ad revenue proves Google is simply monetizing the AI answer space instead of organic links. If your PPC campaigns are not delivering results, shift testing budgets toward Performance Max (PMax) campaigns targeting generative search inventory.

SEO News & Updates
1. Late-July SERP Tremors Kick Into "High Gear"
Google’s continuous summer adjustments are aggressively re-evaluating intent matching and on-page engagement signals. While early July saw targeted drops in commodity content, this latest weekend surge is heavily impacting local rankings, affiliate product roundups, and comparison tables.

2. Google Cracks Down on Fake & Incentivized Review Schema
On July 24, Google formally updated its Review Snippets structured data documentation with an explicit new prohibition: "Don't include fake or undisclosed incentivized reviews on your page or in your structured data markup."

3. Technical Alert: GSC "Request Indexing" Bug with Robots.txt
On July 27, webmasters across the industry began reporting widespread errors when using the "Request Indexing" tool inside Google Search Console. The tool is erroneously failing URLs or throwing false-positive blocks related to 'robots.txt' files, even when the underlying site architecture and directives have not changed.

4. Local & GEO SEO: ChatGPT Gains Direct Yelp Integration & Ads Manager Upgrade
July 23–27: OpenAI officially granted ChatGPT real-time, native access to Yelp reviews, ratings, and business photos. Concurrently, OpenAI rolled out conversion bidding, geo-exclusions, and bulk campaign management tools inside the expanding ChatGPT Ads Manager.
If you run local lead-gen sites or rank-and-rent properties, your reputation management strategy must shift to Yelp. Dominating Yelp reviews now directly controls whether your client gets cited as the "best local provider" inside ChatGPT answer queries.

5. Paid Media: Google Ads Editor 2.13 & PMax Household Income Exclusions
Google released Google Ads Editor 2.13, bringing full offline support for AI Max Shopping campaigns. Media buyers spotted a silent rollout of Household Income exclusions directly inside Performance Max (PMax) campaigns.
The PMax Household Income exclusion is a massive win for affiliate marketers selling high-ticket items or B2B software. You can now actively block low-tier income brackets from draining your PMax ad spend, drastically improving ROI on AI generative search placements.
