H1 2026 Sitrep: January to June recap
The first six months of 2026 have been some of the most volatile in SEO history. We saw three confirmed Google algorithm updates, two unannounced SERP tremors, and the most aggressive rollout of AI Search features in recent times.
January 2026: AI Overviews Expand & Rise of GEO
- Zero-click search pandemic: Google heavily expanded AI Overviews (AIO) across informational queries, grabbing top-of-SERP real estate. Zero-click searches surged as AI answered basic "how-to" and "best X for Y" queries directly in the SERP.
- Rise of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Google expands the integration of AI. Forcing AI models to cite your sites as entities officially became a priority over traditional organic link building.
- Discover updates: Unannounced updates to Google Discover began rolling out, heavily penalizing syndication networks and scraped listicles.
- Discover Core Update: Google officially confirmed the February 2026 Discover Core Update, refining engagement and user interest signals. Sites relying on clickbait titles, automated web stories, and recycled news got wiped from the Discover feed.
- Silent tremors: Massive multi-day volatility spikes were recorded on Semrush sensor and trackers.
March 2026: The 24-Hour Spam Purge & The Broad Core Update
- Spam Update: Google launched the March 2026 spam update, which rolled out and completed in just 24 hours globally (March 24-25). The spam update targeted scaled AI-generated content networks, expired domain manipulation, and programmatic SEO (pSEO) builds. SpamBrain got a major upgrade.
- March 2026 Core Update: Google launched the March 2026 core update, triggering massive ranking shifts (roughly 80% of top-three results shifted across tracked informational queries). The Core Update heavily favored "big brands," destination domains, and institutional sites. The comparison blogs and thin affiliate sites lost their rankings.
- Parasite SEO Hit: Google heavily targeted parasite SEO. Sub-folders and sponsored posts on educational (.edu) and high authority news sites started losing their rankings as Google devalued 3rd-party host manipulation.
April 2026: Ads Platform AI Integration & Parasite Fallout
- Paid ads invade AI answers: Google Ads began testing and integrating Gemini-powered conversational ad formats directly into AI Search experiences.
- Parasite Fallout: Persistent devaluations for parasites without tiered social signals and real user engagement metrics.
May 2026: Google I/O Overhaul & The May Broad Core Update
- Google I/O: Google announced its biggest search engine redesign in 25 years, making "AI Mode" and agentic search assistants the default framework. AI search is no longer just a "snippet" at the top; it is becoming the underlying operating system of Google Search.
- May Core Update: Google May 2026 core update targeted niche sites with templated layouts, translated AI content, and sites that survived earlier updates by hiding behind high domain authority without offering unique E-E-A-T signals.
June 2026: Final Tremors, June Spam Purge & AI Performance Tools
- Final Tremors: As the May core update closed, massive unexpected ranking tremors shook YMYL (especially gambling/casino) and tech niches. PBNs with weak IP diversity and obvious footprint linking patterns got hammered.
- AI Performance Reports in GSC: Google rolled out new feature allowing webmasters to track impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Reporting Section: BWT introduces new AI reporting features - Intents, Topics, Citation Share & Compare.
- June 2026 Spam Update: Google quietly rolled out and completed a fast June 2026 spam update.
