Hi, our website traffic has continued to drop by 85% from its peak since the Google June 2025 core update.
Done the site audit, fixed some content issues, optimize internal links, but now it's even worse.

We lack backlinks from high authoritive websites, as it is hard to get.
Will backlinks help with traffic recovery?

If anyone has helped a website recover traffic, could you please share any tips or any jobs you have done to make it work? Thanks!

Yes. I did.
My website got hit after 30 march 2024. for few months i waited. It happened because my website design and ui was similar to many others in my niche.

Around november, i reset my website and started designing it from scratch by taking inspiration from different website in broad niche of my sub niche.

redesigning worked.

I got back my rankings back better than it was before. Since then, I still get hit with updates but i never get heavily impacted by updates now.

85% of the drop is because of the backlink Google may have reassessed content quality, topical authority, user value, intent alignment, or overall site trust rather than simply link authority. Working on Onpage, Technical aspects and then building backlinks helped me to sort this issue in a very easy way.

Hi, this happened with one of my site also it dropped all of a sudden and only backlinks aren't enough to fix this. The recovery start only after identifying which page lost its ranking and then I improved it on search intent.

Backlinks can help, but they usually are not the main reason for a big traffic drop after a core update. I'd focus first on improving content quality, fixing weak pages, and strengthening topical authority. Make sure your site provides real value and has strong trust signals. Once that's done, relevant high quality backlinks can help support recovery.

Generally if you had ranked well without backlinks the problem should be that you don't have/update your content enough. You should update your posts at least twice a week and that should help you recover your previous rank.

An 85% drop usually makes me think there's something bigger going on than just a backlink problem. Backlinks can certainly help, but if the site was hit by a core update, I'd want to understand why before investing heavily in link building.

One thing I've seen repeatedly is site owners focusing on what changed after the update instead of what was already weak before it. Thin content, overlapping articles, lack of clear expertise, outdated information, poor user experience, or content that doesn't really add anything new can all contribute. In those situations, adding links sometimes improves rankings a bit, but it doesn't fully solve the underlying issue.

If I were investigating, I'd compare the pages that lost the most traffic with the pages now ranking above them. Not just backlinks, but content depth, freshness, author credibility, topical coverage, user intent, and overall quality. Some recoveries I've seen came from pruning and consolidating content. Others came from rewriting key pages entirely. The sites that recovered fastest usually figured out what Google started rewarding rather than just trying to restore what used to work.

I'd be curious whether the traffic loss was sitewide or concentrated on specific sections. That often gives the biggest clue about what's actually going on.

Glad that your website recovered. Good for you! I have been considering redesigning the website and it is in process right now. Before that, just need to know what else can be done.

Thanks. I think it is a site trust issue, as all blog posts (even product pages) lost ranking and dropped to 50-100 position, not just specific ones. Now AI Overview answers all information, and only high-authority or popular brand websites rank on the first page. It seems there are so many things to do, just have no clue where to start. I'm now working on a content re-audit, trying to delete and merge old content.

For me, all pages (blog posts and product pages) are dropped to 50- 100 positions. How was your website doing? Have you done anything to it yet.

Yep, content quality is a problem. I have merged some thin posts with related topics or deleted no-traffic outdated content directly, add useful info to posts, but it hasn't been working yet. We used to rank high even without backlinks, so I did not invest too much time in it. Gradually, backlink lost, and no quality backlink added. It's hard to beat those well-known brands in our niche.

Yes, we used to rank high on the first page, SERP or AI Overviews without backlinks. There are hundreds of posts; we may not update them so regularly, only check and update some of them at certain times. How would you manage so many posts if you need to update them at least twice a week?

Thanks for the analysis. The traffic loss was sitewide, blog posts and product pages all lost their rankings. They ranked 1-2 pages; now tanked to 7-10 pages.

We rank mostly for information-intent keywords; most of them are answered by AI Overview already, or only high-authority, popular websites, or reddit, forum are ranked on the first pages. Because blog brings more traffic, it impacts us a lot.

Google used to rank us well, so we don't focus on building backlinks, and also don't have too much budget for it. Most of the backlinks are from different types of websites, not direct-related niche as ours. So we are weak in high-quality backlinks.

I'm now pruning and consolidating content to make them more valuable, but it has not worked since then. I heard that you have to provide first-hand experience, and write tips/guides that are unique and no one has ever written. But it's hard to write such content.

Someone said you can try to republish those old content with new URLs, so Google will crawl and re-evaluate your content based on your current topic authority (you may not have it previously). I haven't tried it yet. I'm afraid the old pages will lose all the accumulation it has, such as recorded index history, internal link weight, and Google's historical trust...

Wonder if someone has tried this way?

I tried changing old content and it helps. But I would not change the URL if the page was already indexed before. You can really lose some weight from that.
If old pages are not ranking now, I would update data, numbers, prices add some more exact keywords from GSC, and make the content more useful. But I would be very careful with headings and especially with URLs. After big changes Google can read the page as a new intent and it will need time again to build trust.
Sometimes pages drop from index just because your site was unavailable when Google crawled it. I had this recently: one article was indexed for a long time, then dropped out. The page already had all improvements, so I manually sent it for indexing again, and now this page is ranking 2 in search.

Ikr that 85% drop hurts af but buyin expensive backlinks right now won't fix shit, bc Google flagged your site for low-quality helpful content during that core update, so u gotta ruthlessly delete or totally rewrite your weakest AI-looking articles to build real topical authority first before Google will even look at your links again
Thanks, I'm continuing to work on fixing content now. I did not make big changes to delete too many articles(they used to gain traffic) or combine them; I was afraid it would get worse. Indeed it is. Since things are already like this, we'll make major changes.

Some opinions are: Google doesn't punish AI content, as long as you offer valuable info in the article?

All posts are writing on our own or ghost writting. They are passed through the AI Content Detector, though.

If this happened to you, don't worry, you're not alone, after google's latest update, many sites saw significant traffic drops overnight, the good news is that recovery is possible, but you need to be methodical, not reckless.

Before touching anything, go to hoogle search console and check the exact date the drop started, compare the weeks before and after to see which pages and searches were most affected, if the impact was consistent across the entire site, it's a general quality issue, if only one section dropped, review what those pages have in common, also, check the manual actions tab just in case, but these days it's more common to see an algorithmic adjustment, not a direct penalty.

The real problem now is that google rewards the amount of new information you add compared to what already exists, if your page just repeats what everyone else is doing, you're screwed, to recover, you need to add your own data, show screenshots of your experience, and offer a unique approach that can't be found anywhere else, focus on your top ranking pages, update outdated statistics, and strengthen internal links, recovery may take weeks or months, but with patience and well targeted changes, traffic will return.

after big google updates, recovery is not usually does not happen from just one fix. backlinks can help but they are not always the main factor if the drop is update related. i had better results focusing on improving content depth, matching search intent more closely and strengthening internal liking first. once the site quality is clearly improved then adding relevant high quality backlinks can support recovery over time.

In case of core update on your site, you should first think of improving your content in terms of its quality, relevance, and technical aspects rather than getting more backlinks. Improving your content in these area can prove much more beneficial than acquiring additional backlink.

seen cases like this where on page fixes alone did not bring recovery. backlinks can help but only if the content and intent match what google is currently rewarding after the update. in most recoveries i have seen it is a mix of updating content depth and improving authority signal not just link alone.

yeah i have seen similar drops after core updates. backlinks can help but recovery usually is not quick. in most cases it takes time for google to reassess the site even after fixes. i would focus on consistency and quality links rather than expecting fast bounce back.

Yes backlinks help, but the domain itself matters just as much as the links pointing to it.
The same backlink hitting a fresh domain versus an aged domain with established topical history behaves completely differently.

On internal linking is a good move, but make sure the content itself actually satisfies search intent first.
Restructuring links on weak content just spreads the problem more efficiently.
