Not gonna lie, I used to dump 30 hashtags on every post thinking it would magically bring followers. Honestly? Some posts got traction, others… crickets.

Here’s what I’ve noticed over time:
  • Relevance matters more than quantity — a few hashtags that actually match your content outperform 20–30 random trending ones.
  • Mix popular and niche tags — big tags get eyes, niche tags reach the right people.
  • Engagement beats hashtags — if your post sparks comments, shares, or saves, IG pushes it further regardless of tags.
  • Stories and hashtags — hidden hashtags in stories still help, but only if your story actually gets viewed.
From my experience, hashtags are like seasoning, they help, but if your content isn’t good or engaging, no hashtag will save it. Overdoing it just looks spammy. If i may ask, do you go full 30 every post, or pick a few that actually fit the content?

They're not that important nowadays, especially once you grow your account to a larger size. I personally do 3 to 5 per post, depending on the type of content I'm posting.

i find that with or without them, i get almost the same views, engagement.

I think it's not as powerful as it used to be, but it's not entirely unnecessary either.
Hashtags are no longer a "boom" tool. They function more like a signal that clarifies the topic of the content.

When used strategically as precise labels for the algorithm, hashtags remain a valuable, low-effort tool for ensuring your content reaches the right audience.

Hashtags are vital when it comes to specific content, and getting reach on the explore page. I know you mentioned 30 hashtags, however 10-15 ones that are specific to the content you are posting is good.

I use only 4-5 of them and if I compare the reach from now and 2-3 years before, right now it's less than in the past. Therefore I believe that hashtags are redundant right now.

Pick 1 or max 2, especially if you are going for niche content or trying to fit in a specific sub-culture.

Now they are completely useless. I remember 5-6 years ago, it was easy to get to the top of the hashtag, and if you got there, you could get a ton of traffic. Now it doesn't work at all.

They work for the algo to help classify your content in the right niche, but they don't work for SEO anymore. I think the CEO confirmed sometime back they are no longer prioritized
