For those of you hands-on in SEO, what’s the most effective approach you’ve used to get your content included in AI overviews (like Google’s)? And if you work with an SEO team rather than doing it yourself, what specific tactics or changes have they implemented that actually moved the needle?

Google features sites in AI overviews based on 3rd party information. If you don't have any backlinks, you'll have very little chance of getting featured in AI overviews. Always focus on brand mentions, niche relevant & contextual backlinks, on-page SEO, and branding. AI just curates best sources of information not best content. So, more than your content, your brand reputation and context matters more.

What worked for me was writing super clear, answer-style content and building authority around one topic. SEO teams helped most by cleaning up content, adding FAQs/schema, and fixing internal links , simple stuff, big impact.

AI will prioritize finding the most accurate and trustworthy content. What you need to do is strengthen the credibility of the content owner, ensure the content is accurate and widely reviewed, and most importantly, use a domain with high authority and trustworthiness.

Content that clearly answers actual search queries in simple language, strong E-E-A-T signals, and tight topical coverage are all practical implications of this. Collaboration on content organization (e.g., using clear headings and summaries), the addition of unique insights or data, and the alignment of pages with search intent (rather than merely keywords) are the most effective ways to shift the needle.

The main focus of this approach requires building content around entities and providing straightforward responses to queries. Our team made improvements to the website structure and internal links and FAQ section and organized content into related topic clusters.

The search for a magic trick continues but we have discovered that making pages extremely clear helps AI extract answers more efficiently.

Make your FAQs very clear on the website and make sure your on-page schema is perfect and optimize the texts for EAT.
And if you have 3rd party sources backing up your claims, thats the strongest signal. Like Quora, Reddit or Linkedin Mentions.

Clear structure and topical authority. Direct answers near the top, tight internal linking, clean headings, and light but frequent updates. That moved AI overview visibility more than links for us.

Short answer: There’s no direct “opt-in,” but these work best so far:
  • Put the direct answer at the top
  • Use clear headings & bullet points
  • Write short, factual, no-fluff content
  • Build authority (related articles, internal links)
  • Keep content updated & trustworthy

What SEO teams change that works:

  • Rewrite pages to be clearer and shorter
  • Focus on one topic per page
  • Improve structure, not just keywords

Early wins for me came from tightly answering one intent per page and backing it with real-world expertise. Pages with clean structure and cited facts seem to surface more in AI overviews lately.

Content - this is key, if you're creating random content around your niche/business, it doesn't really count.

Create content that your target audience is looking for - could be a Q&A page, a blog post with headings that are inspired by user searches.

Look into your content structure a bit more deeply.
