Article submission with unique content and high page rank article directories really help to increase the page rank, but trying the superlative function of article directory and link wheel will be more effective comparing to individual use of these techniques.

Yep I agree with you to some extent. But a famous qoute "It's not the gun, but it's man behind the gun". There are many other freeware tools are available but it does not mean that every person can use these tools effectively.

Doing nothing and getting everything is not a good idea. First need your keywords for which you want to rank on google and then hire link builder for this purpose.

I totally agree with your idea of useful and unique content that's what a visitor looks for. If you want to rank on the top page then select the keywords (general rule high traffic and less competition). But I recommend you to continue your idea of adding new articles.

I am using the amr method for creating the backlinks. I prefer it over methods because you can get backlinks with text (unique in each post), that's differentiate it from other link building methods.
