Drop an html fine somewhere on the server that you can access outside of wordpress with FTP. That way, you can see if wordpress is misbehaving or the web server. Also, have a friend test both as well since that'll be from a different IP address.

In my honest opinion, there is no reason to be cheap with domains. Go through somebody reputable like godaddy that has added features like DNS, domain management, etc. Having managed hundreds of domains that have been across many providers in the past, I can honestly say the time you save in...

I would say it is less niche sites would be in higher demand because organic SEO would be tougher. Car dealerships, real estate, etc pop into mind.
