What is rel=canonical?
If we have 5 languages, is rel=canonical the original language that all others shall link back to?
Today the rel=canonical is set with the language code in the end of this automatically by Weglot. How can we change this to test our theory?

I have so many articles I'm afraid I'm missing less relevant pages which is making the site as big as it is. If I only redirect homepage and then some other pages a lot of pages is not redirected.
So I can not redirect some articles to one place and then redirect others to some other place? I can only redirect the entire domain to keep juice on main keywords for homepage of domain?

Yes it will redirect to a relevant page, but it also contains many other relevant pages within the domain, articles that rank #1 for other keywords which is other places at new domain. So how should I redirect the entire domain with a 301 or entire domain with 301 and then also all this #1...
