Subdomain vs folders.
For me its not only from a SEO perspective but also from costumer/visitor perspective.
Lets say my page is about shoes. I have shoes special made for running and special made for bikes and last special made for pets (dogs and cats). Its very confusing when I go a little off-topic in my articles. For instance when we talk about the shoes for bicycles we also mention the different kind of locking mechanism on the bike. And we have articles about the type of pedals and bike accessories.
We have the same type of articles about pets. Like cats going outside in the winter. Where some other blogs about cats link to this article. On the articles about cats we get backlinks from cat webpages which is relevant within cat and also relevant for pets as a group. But it not relevant for running or for bicycles. On Wordpress next article will be about something totally different.
So if relevancy is key, then subdomains should be the way to go. We have a brand, so making many webpages with the same brand doesn't make sense. And in the end, everything is sold by the same local shoe-shop on the same local address.
But when retailers selling our brand link back to us, they link to our support page or main page. Our partners links to our main page. So we will lose most of this link juice, since the main page will only be linked to these 3 different subdomains.
