I use PHP because it's easy to learn, there's tons of examples and tutorials out there and you can host it anywhere. Lack of multitasking is a problem for sure. Really is slowing down my web crawling ability.

I don't understand why you're going to release your system for free. It seems foolish to give your competitors your tools! Release it as a service with a monthly fee attached. This all seems like self sabotage. You've got a good thing here.

What tools are you running? If they're essentially spam tools then you should go with smaller companies that need your custom. They'll be less likely to close your account, I would imagine.

A VPS is just a virtual machine running remotely. I don't see much advantage to running a virtual machine on your own PC to run your tools in. When you turn your computer off, you'll have to shut down the VM too.

Rackspace offers a VPS for $10 a month. They call it a cloud server though. It's 200mhz (minimum) and 256mb dedicated ram. Pretty good for the price. I have centOS installed on mine, but they have a range of operating systems.
