VPS, Virtual Machines?

Sorry if it comes off as a dumb question.

I've been doing IM for quite a while but have recently dabbled into all the fascinating programs. And i read alot of people installing these programs on virtual machines.

Does vps use my computer's own hardware and ram to run? Is it just like a seperate compartment to safely run softwares?

Or is it really like a "virtual computer" that i can access using other computers than my own? and can keep running my IM programs even though I'm logged out etc etc?

Rackspace offers a VPS for $10 a month.
They call it a cloud server though.

It's 200mhz (minimum) and 256mb dedicated ram. Pretty good for the price.

I have centOS installed on mine, but they have a range of operating systems.
 
Vps and virtual machines are two different things.

A vps is a virtual private server, you hire them from a company and have full remote access to it (remote desktop) to do with it what you will.

A virtual machine is a machine that runs under your computer using your computers hardware, it is viewed as a completely seperate machine but requires a half decent system to run it (depending on what operating system your running on your virtual machine)
 
A VPS is just a virtual machine running remotely.

I don't see much advantage to running a virtual machine on your own PC to run your tools in.

When you turn your computer off, you'll have to shut down the VM too.
 
Ahh I guess what I should get is a VPS then.

Coz It's so stupid to leave my computer on with the programs running at night... only to be shut down by my 2 kitties =P

What are some good VPS companies? and what about the cost?
 
What tools are you running? If they're essentially spam tools then you should go with smaller companies that need your custom. They'll be less likely to close your account, I would imagine.

This is unmanaged VPS plan, but we offer managed also, but for this the client need to send request.

I wanna run my scrapers, mailers and scrapebox in the VPS. (i also use my own private proxies)

Is remote desktop a given with the standard vps service?
 
Yes if you want a separate machine to run remotely and completely separate from your primary machine to run all of your tools on, then I agree a VPS is what you want...


The only advantage of a virtual machine (not to be confused with a VPS) is just that, a virtual environment for your primary machine.

It's basically the equivalent of a paper towel for an operating system and they're quite useful for running downloaded cracked software programs on.

They are also really great for trying out different operating systems without having to permanently install them.

However I think most would agree that blackhatters use them primarily for running their cracked software programs (myself included...lol).

If you happened to download, install, and then run an infected program, as long as you did it within your virtual environment, you can basically just throw it out (delete it) and install a new one again with no ill effects on your primary machine whatsoever.

I would also say if you download and use cracked software programs, you should definitely be using one. I'm sure you can now see why it's an obvious choice to first run things like that in a virtual machine first.
You have a completely and fully functional separate machine, running within or on your primary machine...if that makes any sense...lol

Sun VirtualBox, at virtualbox.0rg offers free virtual machines, you can get more info and download it at their site if you're interested.
VMWare is another one that offers virtual machines too, however, I'm not familiar with VMWare as I use VirtualBox.

If you do a search for virtualbox on YouTube you can see how it works. Depending on your machine (memory, processor, etc.), you can have multiple operating systems running simultaneously. You can also download a program called "VirtuaWin" that lets you switch back and forth instantly between your operating systems you have running.

Hope that helps you a little to see some of the differences between the two.

dont use vpsland. support is non-existant. i mean... they dont answer one damn request or email for the life of them...
 
I want to use Virtualbox but it requires a iso file of the operating system? I don't know how or where I would get such a file. I have Windows XP but it's the one that came with my laptop so I wouldn't know how I could make the iso file.

I want to run cracks of SENuke (6.43) and other such programs.

Here is my issue, un-licensed software I can get them and install as many times since I have the gen/crk.

However the issue is with legally purchased software with activation etc, i have bought around two thousand dollars worth in the last couple of months including office etc not just IM tools.

I would like to install softwares on VM so that they can be moved around. Any ideas.
 
lexxian you can use a free program called imgburn to make an iso of the cd you want to install. I personally use a Bare metal solution called ProxmoxVE for my server virtualization needs. It will require a dedicated server with hardware virtualization support most modern CPUs support this you may have to enable it in the bios.

I have been using it for some time now and it is very nice and best of all free. I just had my data center download and install it on my dedicated server been using it on production and test sites.

It can handle OpenVZ virtualization as well as KVM for full hardware EX:windows.
