Social media signals are useful, and google can see them, facebook pages are public depending on the setting you set, and so are facebook shares. and google finds out because you link to your facebook page and your fb page links to you.

It looks like this suggests number of backlinks don't have as much weight on ranking as they used to. It looks like good content that is shared is the way to go.
