Husband getting promoted - Salary Negotiation

Hi Guys!

My husband is getting a little promotion with his job. I'm self employed and own a tanning salon. I need help to see how my husband can negotiate a better salary. He has been with his company 5 years and mostly because of insurance we need for our family (too expensive being self employed). Anyways, he was offered 35K a year and health insurance with his company is about $430 every 2 weeks. How should he negotiate for a better salary.

I feel like 35K a year with health insurance is not much for what he will be doing (a lot of responsibility). Does anyone know what 35K a year would be every 2 weeks with health insurance taken out? We currently live in RI.

Yes, I understand having a business. However, my business is up and down and we have a family to support. If my business goes down, we couldn't live off 35K a year with medical taking out. I believe that would be $700 every 2 weeks on my husbands salary.

Your State is going to have different insurance companies than mine.

I'd call around to some of the local agents by you and see if they can point you in the right direction or even handle it for you.

in my country, we just look for another company every 3 years.
if you are good, you increase between 15-20 %
if you suck, you stay at you current job.

companies claim to "be the shit"; when in fact, they are shit. ant it is the same shit everywhere. so why not get more money for the same shit?

I in all my professional years I asked for "more", cause the new job would have been "more" responsibility. ex boss said no. I quit

He's getting a promotion and it's still only $35k/year? What does he do?

Why is your health insurance over $11k/year?

I don't mean this to be harsh, but why doesn't he seek this information out on his own initiative instead of having you ask around?

Why doesn't he join BHW too?

As far as the health insurance goes, definitely check out your local market (local agents, or you could even get a quote at ehealthinsurance)

Depending on your family's total income, you might even qualify for a subsidy through the government. Might end up saving some money!

As long as it is approached the right way, checking for wiggle room in proposed salary is not too unheard of. If he isn't happy with the salary, do you really feel like there is much to lose by asking?
