I was reading this and thinking to myself, I have friends and family living off 70k a year with a family of 3 in Massachusetts. They live comfortable by taking vacations, new cars, putting kid through college. I read the comments on yahoo and think WTF is people doing with their money? I have a family and kid and self employed and doing well but I use to make a lot less then that with a family of 3 and was fine.

What do you consider upper class for Americans?

I live in Boston, Mass... born and raised... I made 70k supporting a family of four and struggled. Boston is a VERYYYY expensive place to live (rent for a one bedroom 500-1000sq ft is $1500-3000 in the nicer neighborhoods).

My grandmothers three-family house in Boston was purchased for $20k in 1965 and is now worth close to $2 million just to give an idea of how times have changed.

Here in California 70K is nothing. A basic house to rent is $4000. It all depends on where you live. In Arizona 70K can get you a great living.

Yep... Cali, just like Mass... either you work your ass off and struggle if you make under 100k or you do absolutely nothing and collect welfare and sell crack on the side and live like a boss
