Question about keyword competition and keyword tools?

Hi,

I might be a trivial question but still I will ask it:

I noticed during my keyword competition analysis that sometimes long tail keywords are more difficult to rank (based on keyword analysis tools) than the related short tail keyword. It looks pretty illogical for me but is it a glitch on the keyword analysis tools algorithm or there is something I didn't get?

Example: blue car will have a difficulty of 35 and big blue car a difficulty of 40

The intent of the keyword could have something to do with it.

For example "wooden deckchair" and "cheap wooden deckchair" one is a generic term, one is a buyer term. The majority of the time the buyer term will win.

But I thought that by competing for "cheap wooden deckchair", you will automatically compete for "wooden deckchair" as well, isn't it?

That is a long tail keyword vs more generic one (more traffic in general)

Nah in my opinion Google is good enough to understand intent. For example.

Wooden Deckchair
Wooden Deckchair maintenance
Wooden Deckchair that folds
Wooden Deckchair for winter
Wooden Deckchair for summer
Wooden Deckchair for women
Wooden Deckchair with a varnish finish

What tool you are using? Is it Keyword Planner?

Longtails are not always easy to rank, sometimes they could have more competition than the main derivative.

You might be right, but technicaly speaking it is difficult for me to understand how a longtail keyword could be more competitive than the short tail keyword. Or Google is damn smart.

These tools are not even close to the reality. If you are targeting traffic from Google then Keyword Planner is the only tool that can show some real results ( not in all cases because is based on Adwords clicks). Can you check your keywords with Keyword Planner and then share the results here. I doubt you will get the same results.

Here is an example with: "Hosting" and "Cheap Hosting" ( I don't mean that "Cheap Hosting" is a long tail but you will get my point).
Most people will type: "Cheap Hosting","Reliable Hosting", rather then just "Hosting".

Yes but keyword planner is measuring competition for the advertisers not for the SEO part, as far as i understand.

So what i understood so far, if you want to compete for cheap hosting, you will use cheap hosting in your title, description, h1, h2, h3 in your anchors that you will need to diversify ( hosting, affordable hosting, low hosting rates, low hosting prices etc...) and the last common denominator that I see is hosting and not cheap hosting. So I am tempted to believe that by competing for cheap hosting, you will also compete for hosting.

And if you add the sites that compete for hosting, nice hosting, affordable hosting, luxury hosting etc... The keyword hosting should end up with much more competition than any other longtail keywords containing hosting.
