Hey guys, I've just started a website to sell online personal training. Website is:

www.jmatthewsfitness.com

Obviously (I think) the main keyword is "online personal trainer" but that seems to be highly competitive. Am I better off choosing other, less competitive keywords to focus on first (and if so, which ones?), before focusing on the main keyword?

My budget is $300 for now. Going to purchase some SEO services from the marketplace section on this site. Which do you guys think I should get and which keywords should I go for?

Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm completely new at this. Thanks guys!

Well, your question is quite general so will be the answers.

"online personal trainer" can be your long-term primary keyword on the homepage but it shouldn't be the one "you're after" so to speak.

You should create other pages on the site optimized for less competitive keywords and publish fat pieces of content around them. (finding them is beyond this response)

As for linkbuilding...

I wouldn't build any optimized anchor text links to the homepage but stick to the brand and URL. For example:
http://jmatthewsfitness.com
jmatthewsfitness.com
J Matthews Fitness

These will pass authority to the homepage and let it flow through the whole website, therefore, helping your other pages rank.

If you plan on purchasing any services here on the forum I would be careful what you point where and what type of services you use.

I would personally stay away from so called "churn & burn" ones if you plan to use your website for a long time. They are usually link blast of massive amounts of links.

I personally had great experience with building my own PBN. Unfortunately, $300 is not budget for that.

I suggest you start out with manual linkbuilding and focus most of your budget on the content.

Thanks a lot for your response man.

Less competitive keywords seem to be "“personal trainer online”, “online fitness coach” and “online gym trainer”. I might focus on those for now yeah?

Out of curiosity, what type of budget would I need to build my own PBN?

Thanks again.

Online fitness is too competitive if you don't have knowledge or a budget.

My advice would be to find local businesses (or related online businesses), form a relationship and offer their employees/customers a "discounted" service. Make enough to invest in guest posts by piggy-backing off others' customers.

Don't spend any money now on links.

For example, find a specialist health food site and offer to give personalised training programmes to their clients at a knock down price. Give them a percentage of your revenue as a commission.

My budget is pliable - I have capacity to add much more funds in the future.

Thanks for the reply!

SEO for that is going to be pretty expensive and will take some time to get you any real traffic.

In this instance I think Social Media is your friend.

I have the capacity to increase my budget - what do you think I need?

Already on IG too, got 20k followers through using followliker!

It would take a fair amount of analysis for me to give you any real direction but it is an uphill road there.

Keep working on IP, set up a Pinterest and a FB page as well.

I'd guess probably 30x more at least, maybe even 60x. I've done no research into competitiveness and this isn't a niche I work in, but I'd imagine that you need to be a brand to get in the top 10, even for those less competitive keywords you mention. There are a million and one online fitness coaches out there.

Find the easiest channel through which to market. That's why BTB is advising you to use social media - its an easier channel. I'd personally go down a partnership route.

Be very careful what you buy from the marketplace without understanding the possible long term effects. I agree with social media being your friend, maybe reach out to other local businesses and see what partnerships you can form.

Pretty sure that will completely fuck your website if you point a few hundred $0.06 dollar links at it.

Go for quality above all else :)
Can you point me towards someone who offers 'quality', I'm a bit clueless haha.

My advice would be to find some fitness blogs and just email them asking if you can write an article for them. Some might charge but that's not really a bad thing, filters the crap out. That technique should get you some really nice links. Time consuming but worth it. I've seen @t0mmy offer some decent non-spammy looking services but I can't vouch for their quality.

Awesome, thanks - I'll look into it.. Out of curiosity, what exactly could happen by using the services I linked? Would google just take me out of search results?

Those are all high competitive and fit for a homepage.

What you want is a completely different set of keywords.

Think of all the things that are related to your website you can write about for example:
diet
muscles
equipment
etc.

You can then find keywords around these and rank separate inner pages.

Don't get me wrong you can of course rank for the keywords you mentioned it will just take a long time to make return on your investment.

As for PBN...

I personally prefer getting auction domains (not expired) which can be quite pricey. $200 - 500 per piece.

To get a nice little network like this of 7-10 site you're looking at $2-3k investment.

The upside is that you usually need very few of these because they are very powerful.

you can increase your traffic with some forum posting and web 2.0's
