BHW user stealing ad copy

So I was perusing my emails the other day when I stumbled across a promo email from a competitor of mine, reading through it I got a weird case of deja vu.

Something seemed off until I realised it was my fucking sales copy. This lazy bastard not only attempted to copy my software, making a lesser program / package in the process, but has also copied the sales copy entirely.

Now I expect people to attempt to copy the idea behind my software as it happens whenever I release something new (I guess I am just that good) but to take the promo material from an email I sent out just before new years and to send it out about a week later is just fucking lazy and speaks volumes to the creativity and effort that they put into their product.

The fact this person is a BHW user and fully aware that I am also a BHW user does sting a little bit. I have always tried to be civil with my competitors, especially those that are fellow BHW members and I don't intend on changing that today but I would hope he sees this and thinks twice about doing something so shitty in future.

What would you do if you were in this position?

I think you basically said it yourself.. you get what you put in. In the long run, he also will get what he put into it... which is not much.

I should have thought about my poll options a little more, I can't believe I left the most obvious choice out. Next time I make a cowardly call out thread without calling someone out I will put that in as an option.

With that said I would have thought the guy could have written out an email himself. Just stinks of laziness.

Did you contact them directly and tell them you know what they did? Or at least ask them why they stole your sales copy?

Look if the guy is a BHW member, I would definitely call them out, just for the giggles and to highlight they are probably somebody you need to carry out due diligence with, stealing copy is lazy.
If people can't afford to pay somebody to write decent copy for them to promote their own tool then are they the sort of developer to take half measures and abandon the software at some point?
For testing purposes and to save time/money we have all probably used somebody else's copy at some point, but part of the risk is getting caught and called out on it. Name and Shame

Well I guess you can change "This is a domain spam check like no other" to "This is a spam check only like one other!!". But in all seriousness, I would contact them about it asking to at least change the email. Then just keep your software better then theirs.

Well that part of the software genuinely is like no other, I don't see anyone else paying out thousands a month for huge chunks of API access for Moz, Majestic and other services to perform the checks.

And then take it personally. It takes some good skill/money to get some decent sales copy and for a competitor to copy it word for word is pretty low.

At least contact them and tell them what you think. If they want to continue engaging in these practices, then up the anti.

Treat this like a SL. Contact them first. Try to work it out in private. If that doesn't work, then take it public.

I wasn't going to name tbh but I don't mind that you did. Funnily enough I just sent a PM to him telling him it was lazy and notifying him of this post and I come to see he has been named lol

Funniest of all is it was literally a few sentences that were stolen and that was the entirety of his email. I don't understand how it is that hard to write out a quick sales piece, we aren't talking War and Peace here.
