Yes, your final domain can get penalized
Right i figured that but what about the website in the middle? The one 301'ing to the final domain?
Thanks for the reply but for the few months when I was analyzing few competitors on different niches I find they are using something similar like expired domain which has High DA & PA with clean backlink profiles (some are not even relevant to the site niche they redirected to),they are sometimes redirecting to a brand new domain home page or sometimes internal pages. I see they are doing this with multiple expired domains on different pages on a single site. I been tracking them for last few months closely & their ranking & traffic increasing every month. In short answer, if the backlink history of the expired domain is clean means you won't get penalized.
Following problems may come while redirecting expired domain
- Easy for Search Engines to figure out if you have 301 redirected too many sites to your money site
- If the expired domain was affected by Panda, Penguin or the next destructive animal, your money site will be directly affected
- Redirects should be done page to page resulting in need to create lot of pages on money site
- No control on Anchor texts – limited to whatever is already used by linking sites, Setup GWT to migrate website each domain

There's one site(10beast.com) I think you might have seen on every single fb groups & IM blogs lately that I am Damn sure have used this technique to get that ranking! As I have mentioned, if the backlink history of the expired domain is clean means you won't get penalized.
Yes, this kind of things happening in recent times only, particularly after last penguin update happened. (Google is trying something very special). In recent times some sites getting benefits after the negative SEO attack itself. Some sites getting the high rank with spammy links itself.
I am damn sure this trick will not be useful in future.
Yes, it will get penalized. Actually all of them in the chain.
