YouTube 10+ minute extra money question.

Hey guys!

As probably every single one of you have noticed everyone is uploading 10 minute videos on YouTube
lately because it's supposed to give you more money thanks to extra ads.

I have tried this on my videos and checked on two videos I have:

Video 1:

Length: 10 minutes
Retention: 33%
Playback CPM: 6.00$
CPM: 5.29$

Video 2:

Lengt: 7 minutes
Retention: 49%
Playback CPM: 6.45$
CPM: 6.25$

This means my shorter video is making more money than the 10 minute one.
Did they change something recently to stop the abuse of 10 minute videos?
Or does the lower retention on my first video have such a big impact on the CPM?

I'm confused and would be glad to discuss this with someone!

I checked the 10 minute video and it has it at 0:25 seconds which it put automatically.
So everyone without adblock should see it I assume?

Yeah I know retention has a lot to do with ranking your video and sort out the bad stuff. But never heard of it actually affecting the amount of money you get per 1000 views.
I am very interested in getting to know more about this as I see no point in making 10 minute videos if I get the exact same money or more for 5-7 minute videos.

Thinking if it might have to do with the midroll ad being to early? If they see an ad in the beginning of the vieos there is a "cooldown" for that person to see a new ad or am I wrong?

I am not familiar with how the ads are selected by Youtube. Do you get the same ads on all of your videos? Or maybe you get worse paid ads because your retention rate is lower?

go to the ad settings and click automatically put ads throughout this video.. also force an ad at the start if u wish.

What I do on my ten minute videos is click in ad both in the beginning of the video and at the end of the video.
Then I also put a midroll ad on it.
Seems to be like this on all of my videos. Even 10 minute ones with 50%+ retention get the same CPM or lower than
my shorter videos.

Heard somewhere that you can only get ads that you have to skip/can't skip every other minute. Will putting the midroll
ad too early in the video make it so that they see the ad before the movie starts but then not the midroll ad?

Just seems strange that all YouTubers would make 10+ minute videos if it doesn't increase your CPM.
Is it something YouTube has fixed or am I doing something wrong?
Getting an average of 5 CPM on my videos I think. What should it be for a 10 minute video with ads in beginning, middle and end?

Your CPM depends on the quality of traffic, location of your channel, topic of the video, geo location of traffic, current ad inventory, retention of video, engagement of audience and much more. Length plays very little here.

A 10-minute video with 10% retention gives you 1 minute. A 2-minute video with 90% retention gives you 1.8 minutes. Which one do you think YT will be more likely to display ads on and promote? Same question if you are an advertiser?

I definitely get what you're saying that retention is very important when it comes to ads and CPM.
But the thing is my 50% retention 5 minute videos gives me the same money as my 50% retention 10+ minute videos with midroll ads.
Feels kind of too big to just be a herd mentality.
Logically one extra ad in the middle of the video ought to give you more revenue but doesn't seem to be that way.
Kind of strange that everyone keeps doing it and even more people follow in the same footsteps if it is
a complete waste of extra time editing and recording.

More ads don't always lead to more revenue. A midroll on a shorter video (less than 30 mins) is usually annoying to viewers so they click away after it which lowers your retention and most likely your CPM.

IMO, if you have enabled monetization and have all ad types showing, the best thing you can do for your revenue is:

a) create better videos so the viewers stick around
b) cross promote your videos so at the end of video #1 they go to video #2 instead of to someone else's
c) make more videos

CPM is really out of your control past this. For sure you can figure out ways to bump it, but in the meantime you can be making more videos which will definitely bring you more income down the road.

P.S Keep in mind that a LOT of people have ad blockers which can really mess up your analytics.
