I have a quick question for the local SEO experts on here...

Long story short, I am in the process of starting a charity with the express purpose of collecting old clothes (no money) for underprivileged children.

Initially, I just want to start it in the country where I am currently visiting (I like to travel), but would love to expand the program to other countries I visit eventually.

So finally my question... Would it be better to stick to a local domain or rather use a .com? I will promote it mostly through Social Media & Press releases (+other White Tactics), but I do not want to throw away SEO as a potential referral source.

You should use the area your in so .uk .ca or whatever region you may be using.

Since you are going to expand into other countries, I think you should go with a .org domain and register the .com, just forward the .com to the .org.

If you're only creating one site I agree with the other comments but if you were to create one for each area I would probably go for local. .org is probably best bet in this scenario.

Rather late, but hope you went with your main domain being a .org and going with a .com but have it redirect to your .org domain

Everyone has summed it up pretty well. If you plan to expand to a global scale focusing on one area could be problematic down the road for you even if you gain alot traffic in that area in terms of expanding your business and content. Definitely, go with the main domain as a .org and use the .com has a redirect this is honestly an easy method to ensure you have a wider net to cast in SEO.

This was a great question, did not know that about .org domains holding up for the better in this circumstance. Thank you for asking the question. Thank you everyone that answered. Very helpful!

It might matter with strong competition ,but with webmaster set up to be in a specific country i ranked with .com's everywhere.
