Yes. SEO dead. But it does not mean you should leave it. Learn it more and make more profit. Think about what you have done? Make sure all on page seo is done in write way, means always use quality content and lengthy content and other important On page SEO factors like, Image, video, keywords, title, meta etc... After that come to off page SEO. Always make quality back links and if you decided to use PBN than you should be careful with it.Means always get pbn links from related niche.Okay, just wrapping my words and suggest you to start again with SEO!
It's only a gamble if you don't know what you are doing, or do nothing to ensure ranking stability. I myself was hit by penguin for a few keywords from #1, down to #7-#8,#16. But I have since recovered because my initial work for the site wasn't comprised of bad quality links.
I don't expect anyone who hasn't tasted the success from SEO to understand, but from someone who has spent quite a fair bit on AdWords, I pick SEO any day and anytime. Good luck to whatever your next upcoming ventures are, and may you see success that lasts.

Not really. Google could release another update tomorrow that targets something completely different to what they usually do. You never know. What works now, may not work in the future. That's always been the case.
Just look at how SEO has evolved over the years.
Google are getting smarter, so there will always be a big 'ol game of cat and mouse going on. If you choose to play that game, then you ARE taking a gamble.
Sure you can minimize the risks by 'knowing what your doing' but there is always that chance that your site will be hit.
I mean come on, how many 100% legit whitehat sites have been hit in the past? Plenty..
I didn't say that getting penalty free success thru SEO was guaranteed.What I meant by that quoted line was that if you know what you are doing, you would not see SEO as a gamble, because your results and impending income should justify any future upsets that search engines throw at you.
The payouts far exceed the difficulties.

Now what about those authority sites who never used any tools or deliberately build any backlinks and Google
updates happened boom they tank from page 1 to hundreds.
Moral don't think you are smarter than Google or can predict Google algorithm.

seo as we knew it (past tense) has changed due to fraud and deceit. just like it changed over a decade ago after people started gaming the system by adding unrelated keywords to their meta tags and/or registering domains with unrelated keywords.

I rank few of my kw, on jujjle first page not even caring of SEO or penguin 4.0 update.
Stuffed with kw's which is actual very high competition in nature. (very low earning, bc India)
But I still dont play their game, make my own.

I gave up on SEO in 2013 or around (I've been w/it since 2009 IIRC). Nowadays it is really, really hard, though I was running only blackhat things (doorways mostly) and never created any page that was of actual use to people. At least it seems harder than it used to be back in the days.
