Is it a bad SEO practice to interlink blog posts?

I offer free drafting or posting of articles on my clients' WordPress-based (and other CMS platforms, too) websites when they use my content writing services. Some have asked me to interlink their blog posts each time I draft a new one.

Some of my clients (some of them are provider of SEO services) have a split stance on this practice. Some say that interlinking of blog posts may hurt their SEO (on-page and off-page) campaigns. Some say that it is a good practice. They say passing the link juice is never a bad idea.

May I know your personal stance? Is interlinking of blog posts a good or bad idea?

I'm asking this because I would like to provide "customer education" to my clients who have availed of my content writing services.

I agree with you, @ThatSEO. I advise my clients to install Yoast SEO plugin (if they're using WordPress) because this plugin will prompt you if you've repeatedly use a word or phrase as your target keyword.

So your stance is that interlinking is good.

It's good IMO depending on what your linking it too. If both pages rank for the same keyword it can hurt the seo on one or both of the pages. Usually a good idea to link it to post in a different subject that's relevant

If you interlink where it's relevant then it is good. If they want you to link to all of their previous blog posts in each new post you make then I don't think that will help very much.

May I ask if you could point me to a case study (if you know one) where I could prove to my clients that linking to pages that are ranked for the same keyword might hurt either or both pages in terms of SEO? I could tell this to my clients, but they'll surely ask, "How did you know?"

Hi, @fheaky. I agree, mate. WordPress has a facility in place where you could type in a word or phrase and it will find related articles. You may then link one of the blog posts that appeared on the search results.

Some of my clients even tell me that every new article must contain a link back to the previous article (article published prior to the newest one). It's like a waterfall cycle or whatever you want to call it.

Make sure you diversify when interlinking, so it does not come off as too spammy. Apart from that it should be alright to use this with your blogs.

Diversified is good. Don't make it a consistent pattern among the entire site for every post. Any related articles with similar content is typically good to link to each other, also, link from homepage to your best article will help direct traffic and send juice to your power content or best content. Hi, @Hambone Oblivion. Thank you for your comment. Noted on that. Usually, my clients are only telling me to interlink "posts" and not "pages" on WordPress. I'll ask them if they would like me to interlink posts and pages moving forward.
