I have done extensive keyword research for a niche Amazon website I want to develop and of course there's already someone who has done it perfectly at the top spot. They have it all laid out exactly as I would have and have the Amazon affiliate links in all the right places. It's appealing and it's loaded with review content. When I went to Ahrefs, BacklinkWatch and SEM Rush to see if it's possible to take this site down with some SEO they all report ZERO backlinks! How can this happen? If possible I'd really like to challenge them, even with all of the content because it is a niche I'm actually an expert in real life on.
How is this Site Ranking 1st with ZERO Backlinks?!?!?

He had to use a PBN with crawler blocker that hidde the links in tools like ahref, majestic etc.
When you say "a PBN" is it simply enough that one does the trick? I have only recently begun reading about PBN's. I don't remember them from a few years ago, when I was last in this game. Would it be that a number of domains are linking or one domain with many links?

Yes he have probably linked few site from his own network build exclusively for do that, it can be 3 links, it can be 30 links... I suggest you to look the MOZ metric of the page like trust flow and citation flow for help you to see the real power of the page without seen the links

You can check his robots to see whether he's using advanced tricks to block ahrefs bot.

Of course it look fishy if all the links are hidden but I don't know the keyword maybe the guy do a churn and burn

Not necessarily, if he is a pro SEO, he might be using htaccess for that operation.

Is the fact to rank a site for short term and make big money from high competitive or seasonal keywords, rank asap and when google understand the site is spammy as hell it's the end
This method look not smart but in fact the guy who do that in cycle make big money, you can find some very good study case here on BHW

I was thinking that. This a hobby topic I love and the SERPS are full of message board results that look pretty easy to take out. His site is well written and optimized but he skipped a ton of long tails an it's quite evident he has no personal experience in what he's written.
The question then is what's worth more the PBN or the natural links? If he's running a PBN do we know how many? Is there a rough formula for so many normal in context backlinks = so many PBN links?

Churn and burn is building a site using dangerous links/content. Letting it sit and earn money until it gets penalized. Once penalized you take it down, get a new domain and re-do the site.
Classic Google spam. It works though.

99% of these threads proceed to turn the competitor in.
Is the niche really saturated? If it's an easy niche, you can rank with very few links.
You can also check his domain name on google itself and see. Google's crawler is 100X more powerful than Ahrefs or Majestic, they catch stuff the others can't get close to.

PBN or Natural links? Depends on the strength/authority of the links built. If it's brand new natural links on a "new" page, a PBN will probably be stronger and more authoritative.
How many PBN's? You'd have to see if you could uncover his network to figure this out.
Formula? No this would again depend on #1 of how authoritative the links are.
Build the site, create great LSI content, good on page SEO, create trust links with FB/Twitter/G+/Pinterest profiles, create several Web 2.0's, citations, handful of PBN's. This should get you started to ranking, then add links over time until you reach the position you want.
