Firefox dropping Google to use Yahoo as default search engine

No doubt it will bring more traffic to yahoo, although i doubt it will be a huge amount, since its a simple process to change your default search engine. Be interesting to read the thoughts of the more knowledgeable members on here

I definitely agree with hawkster. would be interesting to hear what knowledgable members think.

Someone who uses firefox will know how to change back to google I think. People who don't understand much will probably be using Chrome or IE. Iv'e done maintenance on quit a few peoples computers already and the average user don't use firefox. They sometimes might ever have it installed but they think Chrome is better. Its the more advanced users that use it and they all know how to change the settings. And they will change them because they are not used to yahoo.

The only way I can see Mozilla actually updating the browser and changing user settings would be through an automatic or manual update,or a clean install. Clean install would obviously not be a surprise but an update that changes user settings? Keep in mind that those settings may already be changed to something else. That would be very unfriendly from Mozilla.

It won't affect people that changed from about:startpage to something else.

I don't think it will change a thing, and let me explain why.

First, I use both Chrome and Firefox. I use Chrome on one desktop and Firefox on the other. I don't honestly like 1 more than the other. I seem to get faster browsing with chrome but firefox has got macros which I also use. Then theres the fact that FF got the spiggot bug a while back, I tried like 10 different anti-virus/spyware programs to remove it (all the top recommended) and it never went away. So I stopped using FF on that computer and replaced it with chrome.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with anything.

What we are really questioning here are long term habits. The SE a person uses is their long term habit. And some people do switch from time to time but most don't.

That's why I think this change will have minimal if no impact at all. If 10,000 people were using Google and Firefox tries switching them to yahoo, I think 9,980 will go back to Google. Even the so called tech illiterate. Cause all they have to do is ask their tech literate sons, daughters, sisters, brothers to switch it back for them and they will. I think that saying "old habits die hard" would fit perfectly here.

If it were 15 years ago when people just took their first-ever computer out of the box, plugged it in and used it - this would matter. Today, a few drops in the ocean.
That's why we all worked so hard to get AOL search traffic 15 years ago - the people who were new users would use the default browser without changing anything - and they were virgin buyers. Today, the "new users" are mostly kids who've already been using their parents' phones and tablets. My six-year old daughter knows to "Google" stuff when she wants information.
Relying on default settings? That ship has sailed.

Basically it's goodbye firefox. I like it, it works and gets the job done. At this point Yahoo is going to be bought out by apple or facebook. It would only take a few tweaks to make yahoo serous again.

The Spigot bug affected various browsers and not just FireFox. Chrome was just as susceptible.

The culprit was most likely Java.

That is very true, though never say never. There's a new generation of kids every century and as this happens, new habits are formed, different to ours.

Google never show relevant search results for me so i have stop using Google long time.

It's a stupid decision imo. I hate yahoo. It's slow and cumbersome. Plus it will take a big chunk of traffic away from people who relied on Google for such things.

I always liked the fact that people who weren't tech savvy tended to use bing/yahoo and this is primarily due to the fact that IE uses Bing for its default search engine. So if you have a niche/product that sells well to tech rookies these engines are decent to target.

So if FF brings in Yahoo I would think that it will only send more inexperienced computer users to that search funnel. Big effect? Nah! One thing that gives IE/Bing a major push is that IE is pre-installed.

Throw in Ubuntu user traffic though...Don't forget those guys!

Bing might be a better idea.

I am not sure but i have read some where that google used to donate good amount of $$ to Mozilla and firefox has only 17% of web traffic and 90% of that are those who know how to change default settings. If you not know how to change it back to google then google it.

It's effect on search traffic ?
Do you know google is one of most searched terms on yahoo and bing. (those non-techies can't change settings but they can still search for google in yahoo)
