Hi guys. Here I want to ask you - how do you find topics for your content?

You want to make your content useful and appealing, that people would come to your site, spend maximum time reading your content and naturally share it with others... Right?

So you need to find interesting topics.

How?

You go looking in all kinds of keyword searchers in hope to find tasty longtail keywords with lot of searches... You look in your GA and WMT in hope to find queries people use to find your site, and try to expand these queries... Right?

Surprise: You're doing it wrong.

I'll tell you now.

What you need to do - is to find topics that people are REALLY interested in. That people would really search, and when they find it at your site - they would read it (assumed you have wrote it good, your site is not spinned junk, right?), stay a long time at your site and then share the page in Facebook. And these topics you can't find in any BestLongTailKeyWordMegaPlanner, and Google will never reveal them to you - because it doesn't know them itself.

So what you need to do - is to find authoritative sites with high natural traffic - and to find pages with the highest traffic/shares/interest. And then to copycat them. I'll show you now.

1. From all possible metrics, we need Alexa. Why? Because other metric shows us some machine numbers, a quality and authority for robots. Alexa shows real human interest.

So you go to Alexa and scrape for example 100 top sites in your subniche.

Now you can't just take all these sites and copy all the article titles from there... We need to chose the articles that users find the most important. How?

Think about that: one site from the Alexa top has 2 million pages in index, and another one - only 10K pages... And they have similar Alexa rank and thus similar amount of people's love... Articles on which of these two sites get more people's love and attention? Rings a bell?

Okay, put the result of the scrape into excel file, and go to the next step.

2. Now you put this list into any SEO tool - like Netpeak or Scrapebox... Parse the number of indexed pages for these sites.

Put these numbers to your excel list.

3. Now you have a nice excel table. If you have some excess data there, delete all but three columns: Domain, Alexa Rank and Indexed Pages.

Create a nice formula like =Alexa/Indexed.

Sort the results by descend.

Bingo! Here we have our champs.

You see what we just did here? We got sites with most specific gravity of the post authority. These articles get real people's interest. This is what really touch and excite people.

But this is not a finish yet. We can't take all hundreds of the sites' pages for our needs, right? We need to filter the articles at each of our champion sites.

4. Take the sites one by one and put them to any tool which shows page social shares - like for example Ahrefs or Quicksprout. Bang! - you get them posts ratings! So the more has an article shares - the more people are engaged with it, the more they like it, the more it answer their questions and needs.

This means, we take these articles topics and just start writing our own articles on these topics, one by one. This will be our ultimate content, useful to people.

Good luck friends.

This is an interesting method. I have allready started one post thanks to that! Let's see if it get as many shares as the "original". Thanks again!

A great way to identify socially popular topics to write upon, however it would be appropriate to also emulate those articles in length and quality.

You're wasting too much time! Just use

Thank you. This is also nice method, but doesn't make the whole job.

I think writing unique article is better option. You are suggesting for using snipping tools. I don't think it is a goo idea. They seems to me artificial and less attractive the unique article. Although thanks for your post.

Of course the content should be unique and well written. The meaning of this method - is how to fin winning topics for this content.

my version of the formula:
1000000 / (alexa * indexed)
because the lesser alexa rank the better

btw, bignose, nice guide!

Yes one can make whatever formula you like, the principle is here.

Cheers

The method you shared is good but it is not applicable for trending topics.
For ex: few things are good for 24-48 hours and if you post anything after that it wont get any exposure.
However your method will work for niche websites for long term.
Thanks anyway :)
