We all know the sooner you begin optimising your website, the better, but do you believe there is ever a point where it's too late to optimise your website (aside from trying to optimise a website that has been permanently deindexed from Google for illicit content)?

I don't think so. Some people wait for months before building a single link.

Yeah, I think the sooner on page seo the better to rank

If the site is not penalized then technically no its never too late. If you climb the SERPS
quickly and throw some high powered links to it without optimizing then you could face
a thin content penalty.

But sometimes it's more effective to create new site and promote it.

Ah, a thin content penalty! I didn't think about that one when I created this post!

Just think about the situation where you buy a website that has lots of spam backlinks. Now that's not likely to happen to the experienced person, but a lot of noobs will make that mistake. Assuming the site is not banned from Google for all those artificial backlinks, you can just start disavowing and asking the site owners where the links appear to remove them. Just start from where you are when it comes to SEO, with on page and off page optimization (even if that means removing bad backlinks).

It is never too late to optimize a site for search engine visibility, most of the people (including me) actually wait for a month or two until they have a decent amount of articles/content on the site before they start building links, because building links on a site without much content may seem bad on Google's eyes and you might get a penalty.

I do start building the links after 1-2 months so that I can see the organic traffic leads. Based on the natural traffic I do start the off-site campaigns.

Webmasters says, Nowadays content is the key for successful SEO campaigns. Develop the content to generate the organic traffic before start building links. Avoid Google to look your website thoroughly when you've thin content.
