Hello,
I'm planning to write a non fiction book in the cooking niche.
Do you have any experience with cookbooks and KDP Select?
I mean, if the recipes are from other sources (not the same source) and I link to the original source, will Amazon accept it in KDP Select?
Here are the terms from Amazon:
"4 Book Eligibility. Because this option is for exclusive content, if you do not control the exclusive rights to your Digital Book or the primary content in your Digital Book, you cannot include it in KDP Select. For example, if your Digital Book consists primarily of content that is in the public domain or licensed by you on a non-exclusive basis (i.e., if others can also publish this content), you cannot include it in KDP Select. We reserve the right to determine the types of Digital Books that we accept in KDP Select. We can choose not to accept your Digital Book in KDP Select or to remove it from KDP Select at any time in our discretion. "
Need your 2 cents. Please specify if you actually wrote and published such a book.

I'm doing cookbooks as well. As far as I know Recipes in general aren't copyrighted. At least that's what I understand, It's actually a huge grey area tbh.
The ingredients aren't copyright protected. But the directions can be.
This is what I understand:
1.Preheat Oven to 350 Degrees
2.Place Cookies in Oven
= No Copyright

First we need to preheat the oven to 350 degrees. I love preheating the Oven because it's ready and warm right when you need it... etc etc.

Though don't take my word, cause I'm still not sure myself. If anyone has an answer that would help lots. Though in general, I think If you make it your own, like write it in your own words then you're okay!
Just sourcing breaks that term you posted, cause anyone can copy and paste a recipe and source it, but no one can write it in your words. You see?

I think it is probably your niche. My sales/borrows seem to have doubled since the launch of KU. Will be interesting to see how much I get for the KU books when they send the figures next month.

There is no copyright on cooking recipes. BUT: Its a copywrite violation if you copy a recipes collection (eg. from a single website or a book). You just have to use different sources and write the preparation by your own. Thats not a grey zone - thats completely legal!
And you dont have to include the sources where you found the reciped because every source is just a copy. There are no copyrights on "how to cook Spaghetti" or "how to bake a cake".You can not invent this stuff.
I make about 1500$ with my 6 cookbooks (5 ebooks, 1 printed book). Thats not so much because I also have a book in a niche that makes this sum alone. But the income of my cookbooks is stable. You cant do anything wrong with recipes, so you dont have to worried about bad reviews.

Thanks, that's encouraging to know. I'll keep my Kindle Publisher account live, but I'll concentrate on what's working for me now. I'll re-visit eBook in a few months.

Then if your book is priced 2.99 at 70% royalty you'll get:
(2.99*0.7 - data delivery fee)*0.7
So around half of the original price at 70% royalty.

Small update:
I have published my 200 page cookbook with CreateSpace to test the water. The kindle verison has about 150 sales per month ($8/book). After 10 days I have sold 10 books of the printed version ($15/book). I think I can reach 50 sales per month. So CreateSpace is another good income source because you allready have the content and you dont need to invest money. Its a nice bonus income and if you are specialized in the cooking niche like me its an option because the people prefer a printed book if they are in the kitchen. I will also publish my other cookbooks at the end of this month.
Next step is to produce cooking videos and publish them with Create Space. I have no idea if someone will pay for videos on amazon!?! Any experience?
