Here's what I've found to work with limited results since the last update:
1. using keyword in domain (gets quick positioning but dies quickly if there's competition)
2. using keyword spamming (same effective, positioning shoots up for 1 or 2 days and then drops
3. replicating articles without rewriting them and keyword stuffing (again, it might work for a day or a week but I've found these things die quickly and then later seem to harm the site in SERPS).

What I've found that HAS worked well.
1. I've been running GSA for almost 3-4 weeks straight building rank to the website. I've indexed my main website with google master tools and I use a simple wordpress theme from Elegant Themes. When running GSA I use my keywords as anchor text and and ahrefs.com to monitor my progress. I rewrote articles from sites that published daily content relevant to my niche and only left one keyword at the bottom of the webpage that served as an internal link. I've done this maybe 30-40 times so approximately once a day. This method was working slowly but it wasn't gaining me any lasting exposure until a combination of one of these two things:

1. I signed up for an indexing service besides what GSA SER and pingdom and pingler can offer.

2. I made sure gsa doesn't get me links lower than PR1

3. I posted all of my posts to FACEBOOK to my personal profile. Once I released a post that people started sharing I put $8 in to boost my results on that post. That led to like 300 clicks, about one hundred shares, and 12000 impressions. It happened to be about an upcoming phone.

I noticed in particular that after I had done that facebook post thing I jumped from 3rd and 4th position where I was sitting up to first and it stayed there. I could be wrong but I believe there is a correlation between social traffic vs organic visits that gives preference to sharing or referrals from social media sites.

yes but I also had a few keyword in domain websites related to my site that I blasted with anything PR0-PR9

do you think my main site will take a dive?

keep in mind I use the PR2-PR9 filter for the main site direct. My experience so far has been good.

would you advise just firing at the tier 2 sites I have set up and not at all on my main? I think SUDORANK posted about a similar method.

I personally do not use GSA in my daily life (I have proprietary tools we have developed)... I do use it for testing though and have a working knowledge of the product.

It is a real good tool but direct to a site is a killer for long term SEO... you need to be using buffer sites such as Web 2.0s and such lest it look like you are blasting the site and Google will see that as unnatural once they catch up to what you are doing.

that's the idea, it's just that I generated some 4000 links or so back to my site already. Probably I have gone too far arleady on the main right?

99% chance you did if you did it in a short period of time.

I just want to confirm that I noticed the same effect with facebook boosts boosting organic rankings. Except for me it was actually G local rankings.

My G local had been stuck for a few keywords at position 5. I boosted a post on FB for my first time ever, then a bunch of keywords shot up to #3 the following day.

So the day after that I boosted AGAIN on FB. And a couple keywords jumped to >>> #1 of the 7 pack.

These were keywords that were ranking stable for a long time, and it was only when I boosted posts on FB that they jumped. I did nothing else so it had to be the social traffic that increased my G local rankings.

The downside is today, Google released the "Pigeon" update targeting Local Serps. And the 7 pack has now disappeared for 9 out of 11 different industries I'm in which = a MASSIVE decrease in traffic. I had literally made a post just a few days ago about how I was killing it with G local then 2 days later G releases this new local update and REMOVES 90% of the 7 packs I'm targeting. It's almost 150 keywords I had ranking in the top 5 of the 7 pack but now there is NO MORE 7 PACKS!!!!!!!

Google better bring back the 7 packs otherwise I'm seriously fucked.

Hey BreaknBrix I don't know what you mean by 7 packs but I should clarify that I was also referring to Glocal listings. I literally blew up on all my keywords and it's been solid for a week. I'm counting on it staying that way and we're getting pretty good visitor flow from it. Also my main competitors dropped off too (super-win) but I expect it to reroll soon with me on the top.

Also BassTrackerBoats I created these over the course of like 2 months. Do you think it's avisable to buy traffic or avoid that altogether in this case.

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about. "7 packs" to me just means G local listings. :)

I can also confirm what BassTrackerBoats said, you should NOT be building thousands of anything to a local business site. I use to use GSA directly on my local sites and they WOULD rank on page 1. But the longest I ever got a site to stick was 10 months. Most of the time Google will take out these sites in 3-6 months.

That's why I stopped using GSA on local sites.

I actually had success with GSA and local (for dentists in competitive areas) but that was before the update. Honestly anything automated these days is too dangerous for a money site you want to keep around longterm. It's a personal choice, but it is reality.

great advice guys thanks. What methods do you normally use in that case to rank for Glocal? I find that to be the biggest money maker for any local business.

I have had success with tiered websites + links to those sites and I have found directory listings to be an absolute must. In fact I get great rankings through Yelp! somehow but I don't understand their ranking system at all.

Did you stop building links after you hit the sweet spot ? May be the links you built might have been deleted .

GSA on a local site will have short term gains, but is not a long term strategy.

in fact I did stop once I got my positioning but I kept on with the tier 2 and now tier 3 links as there's a long way to go one different keywords for which I'm not ranking highly yet.

i just exploded... i hope this stays, i have 35 keywords in 1st place position up from 7..

i haven't done anything new since i discontinued gsa. just posting articles and sharing them on FB
