Ranking for Keywords... Am I doing it Right?

So, I operate a fledgling authority site and I want to make sure I'm correctly optimizing it for SEO.

Made-Up Example:

I have a keyword- "Best Soccer Teams in the World"

I want to rank for that keyword, so I write articles (multiple posts) each one explaining a different soccer team. In each article I am trying to rank for the main keyword, "Best Soccer Teams in the World", but also a secondary keyword. For example "FC Barcelona" (the soccer team the article is about). I then link all these articles together with "Page 1, 2, 3... etc" and call it a series on this topic.

How can I improve this? Am I doing SEO completely wrong? Please provide your thoughts.

Personally, I would say this pretty old and wouldn't do it now

Here is you options :


Option 1 : If Keywords are EXACTLY like this :
- Best Soccer Teams in the World
- Best Soccer Teams in the World - Fc Barcelona
- Best Soccer Teams in the World - Real Madrid

Then, I will put all of them in the same article. These are all longer tail keywords from the main keyword. Write a paragraph about each of them and you will rank for the keyword and its longer tails

Option 2 : If your keyword are like this :
- Best Soccer Teams in the World
- FC Barcelona, The Hero of Spain
- Real Madrid , The royal team

Then you need to separate them into different articles

VERY STRONG TECHNIQUE Would be :

- Home page : Main article covers all the teams ( Shor Paragraphs) ( Best team in the world )
- Inner page : FC Barcelona, Real Madrid ( In-depth Articles ) ...etc

Now, you did something different from competition, you pleased your visitors, and your pleased the search engines. Always try to come up with ideas, sketch a lot and offer something different. I promise you, it will be a lot more fun and a HELL MORE PROFITABLE

So, I would write an all-encompassing article covering many related topics. Then, within that article, I link to other articles that go more in depth on each of those topics.

Sounds very logical and effective.

For SEO, would I only create links to the main article or build them to the smaller, in-depth articles as well?

Never optimize more than a single page for the same main keywords, as you just need one page properly optimized for its target keyword.

I hear that a lot, and it makes sense... but I don't really understand WHY? Is it an efficiency thing, or will multiple articles targeted at the same keyword harm my site?

I am open to change, I just want to understand why people always say that.

targeting the same keyword in multiple post is considered keyword stuffing and duplocate content

Plus there is no needto do it

If your an authority site, Just write your articles for people
always link back to your home page, using differnt terms

and do internal linking, don't over do it,

Plus a link to another authority site in your niche. every now and then is natural and good for SEO

In fact since I stopped writing articles for the search engines and wrote for my viewers
I', getting better results

It still good to have a keyworsd in the url and in the headline
it doesnt have to be exact.

having different versions of the keyword, lets google know what you want, without having to stuff it

Google will know what the page is about and rank you accordingly

Because your articles would fight one another which to rank on Google. And when 1 does (if it does) the other pages are pretty much useless. Plus, you don't get any real benefits from interlinking this way. However, if you have 10 pages targeting different other keywords closely related to your niche (can be long-tail for more benefits) which rank for those certain keywords and they link to the page which contains your main keyword, then the later page (with your main keyword) will move up in the SERP-s just from the strength of your internal backlinks. Getting a backlink from a page that ranks for a certain keyword related to yours is 100x better than getting backlinks from other pages which don't rank for anything.

Thank you for explaining that! So, a main article covering lots of topics and then smaller articles with all the topics explained in depth. With internal links from the main article. Main article is only article with main keyword exactly.

Meta Tags is what the search engine displays, correct? Sometimes I write these manually, but other times I just use the auto generated ones if they contain the keywords I want. Thoughts?

And descriptions? I know what that is on a picture, like a caption. I always put the keyword in the image picture name, alt, description and caption. Is that what you meant?
