lol a search engine which will only index our own weak spam heavy sites

Thanks for all the comments guys and girls (if any).

Obviously a lot to think about.

It can be done. Not surpassing google but getting as big as ask ask/yahoo maybe

To OP:

I understand how you feel about all the haters around here. Those "don't reinvent the wheel", "google spy detected", "dumb idea" those people are probably making less than $1k/month hence they are less open-minded to ideas like this.

I recently posted my idea a while back on a SEO reporting tool with the main purpose of just gathering feedback and that thread pretty much got thrashed because some people on BHW whenever they feel a bit uneasy about a new idea or just a new "thing", they just post useless comments putting you down.

To people who post comments similar to this:

"Don't reinvent the wheel" - This idea isn't about beating Google or Bing. It's about making money. There are plenty of unknown search engines that are making 10x more than what you are making now. Remember Friendster or MySpace? I bet when Mark had his idea, there are some of his friends who told him the same thing "don't reinvent the wheel". I bet they didn't see the huge success of Facebook coming.

"Google spy detected" - Are you trolling? If you're not, your level of intelligence must be pretty low.

"Dumb idea" - We plan to create an app that allows users to post what they think about online and let's limit it to 150 characters. Our app allows users to edit photos and share them online.

That's Twitter and Instagram.

Ideas are not dumb. Its the people who build the idea that needs to be smart.

My suggestion to OP is to post on a programming or entrepreneur forum instead of BHW.

My opinion on the idea

The idea is great but the competition is tough. One of the toughest but the industry is a billion dollar industry. Imagine if your business take just 0.5% of the market share.

Copy 90%. Differentiate and innovate the other 10%. That 10% is what is going to make you stand out from the giants like Google and Bing and make money.

I don't see a point why we should get our search engines because google is our target its very simple

so you think you (and some other deluded souls) can do what Bill Gates and his billions can't?

Yeah lets create our own search engine where it's easy to rank shady shit, duplicate content and poorly written articles for the sake of making money in ways which Google forbids us to. There's a reason Google is so harsh and picky with websites, it's about quality control, and assuring that people who use the service continue to use it.

Also really? No ideas to monetize something like this other than CPA? lolol

IMHO unlike some other projects, search engine is the type of project that starts with a bright mathematical idea.
Until we have that idea there is no point in crowd funding, because the end result will fail to compete no matter the implementation.

With 250,000 members, assume half of them contribute at least $5 would mean a pot of $625,000 as seed capital.

That would pay Google's server's electricity bill for 3 days. $625k is nothing for this project. Absolutely nothing.

Besides, you have no major game changing idea that would give you market advantage. It can't just be another search engine. It has to be truly unique.

You want to beat Google with $600k capital which should include planning, registration, hosting, programming and then marketing ? Google spends that much a week for their server hosting, if not a day.
Do you have any idea how much alternative search engines are out there ? About which you have no idea that they even exists ? Nobody can beat Google, plus if you add yahoo, bing, aol, yandex, baidu and few other big names in SE world - you are nowhere.

Instead of finding way around Google, find a way to get into it.

Nope, I am actually old enough to remember using the internet before Google even existed.

I think the biggest search engine at the time was called "archie", although I was using the internet well before then.

You must be very young.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I imagine you would know better than me as to how many active members there are here at BHW.
My number was purely a wild-ass guess.

As for getting a few servers together, thats not a problem for me. I already own several servers (proper hosting at a DC not shared or reseller etc).

Well Im already preparing my BST. "DOMINATE BLACK HAT SEARCH" (with added secret sauce)

Big idea OP. Its good to think big but the amount of active members here is grossly exaggerated and you would be lucky to get the money together to get a few servers together let alone a full time monitored data centre.

You surely don't own the server power that it's going to take. I don't think you have any idea.

Well obviously over time more server power would be required, but just for starting up, you would not need an entire datacenter.
I spent almost 20 years in IT (server admin, network admin, routing, tech support, security etc...lots more), I do have a very good idea whats needed, and again just to start I would not need an entire floor of servers.

Ok. I won't say its impossible but lets assume that our search engine is ready, programming and all is done, but the biggest question is how will you stop people to use Google,Bing, etc.
You know bing is better than google(It gives me better results while searching) but still bing is nowhere near google, why? Because people are addicted to google many doesn't know there are other search engines.
You have to do ads on TV, newspaper, on every other possible source just to catch people's eye and let them know there is other search engile also, and it will require around $xxx, xxx, xxx(estimate) just for advertising.
Also who knows if people will accept the new search engine besides google and they wont then congratz we've just wasted MILLIONS in nothing.

I'll tell you what google did, Internet was quite new google spot the opportunity and created SE as they knew, people will use their SE even if it wasn't good at all at that time because people had no choice, there were almost no alternatives.

for eg: A new product comes into market and there is very huge demand for that type of product but there are no competitors, so people will buy that product no matter what because they have no other choice.

I hope you get what I am saying lol.
