The best idea is to mix both.
Despite the fear involved in SEO these days, links still win 99% of all battles. Npot building links because you are scared = not winning the SEO battle.

You can still get traffic though. The problem with that is traffic stops a few days after you stop working on it most of the time. It's constant. You work on traffic (none SEO mthods) you get visitors - as soon as you stop the visitor levels begin to drop.
SEO (links) means you work - then you can stop for days, weeks even months and the traffic just keeps coming.

That's my experience anyway.
The alternative is to become an authority yourself. Don't kid yourself that this is easy or quick though,. Think in terms of years.
But once you are an authority SEO will be done for you by your visitors creating links naturally.
None authority sites rarely have natural links.

Sometimes, the usual programs that work for you will no longer work again. So many things have been changing in the world of SEO. Algorithms can take over your results for all you know. Open yourself to more choices. Working with affiliates could also do you go good.

The pages on the authority sites have less than 10 links... the domain probably has 100's of thousands of links. I have one eComm site that out ranks Home depot, lowes and the like. It's possible, but took me a year and 20K to get there. worth it though.

Thanks Svabb. Good points and definitely things I have already considered. I'm worried about playing the numbers game because the authority websites outranking me have less than 10 links... However, your point about waiting is really good because I have noticed that after about months of solid link building, the great ranking increases are achieved. Unfortunately, clients don't understand "patience" :/

I have a few amazon stores ranking for long tail keywords. #1 & #2 spots. Sure the MAIN product is not on page 1 but it has not stopped sales. Push for beating the authority site but dont spend all your money doing it. Instead go for long tail keywords that the authority site is not getting. Money is money no matter if its from a main KW or not.

You simply need more links, quality links preferably. If your site is old / authoritative enough you can work in a FEW quality sape style links a week (don't send hundreds in a month, and only get .com TLD with little to no OBL, there is tons of these on sape). I have sites that've been using sape links for 1+ year that are ranking extremely well and were never hit, because I don't go overboard with it. I get amazing results with linkworm and niche integrity also.

Not a bad idea, but I don't want play the SAPE game with a client's website :|

Thanks Scritty, all great points. This client in particular is looking for SEO results because they are already have a pretty successful business through PPC and longer tail traffic. Obviously, they are trying to take things to another level by wanting to rank for national keywords

Jeez, 20k! I wish the budget I had was that large. Unfortunately, this client has me on shoestring budget, which is making things even more challenging.

Hey guys,

So I have been doing SEO on a large eCommerce website for about two months now, and I have been using all the normal techniques that USUALLY work for me: relevant, contextual high PR links, quality web 2.0s, PDFs, and social bookmarks with less than 10% exact match anchors.

I have hit these pages hard with PR links and it feels like I'm never going to get past the authority websites on the first page.

All 10 of the keywords (national KWs) I'm working on are between positions #8-15. Authority websites on the first page include Walmart, Overstock, Amazon, IKEA, and Macy's to name only a few.

Do I need to take things up another notch and get some PR 6 + links? I'm pretty much stuck at this point. What strategies do you guys use to get above the annoying authority websites?

Its going to be hard but its doable. The problem is, G favours these sites (MONOPOLY).

Yes, your going to need at least 5 PR6's that are RELATED to your niche. Dont expect to outrank these sites by getting high PR links from unrelated sites. It must be related. If your targeting Genital Warts then the PR links have to be from sites that are WART related or Health Related.

You can also create your own network. Buy high PR domains and make them related to your niche then link back from them.

my suggestion would be get some social authority (social shares) as you are having a good link authority already.

You can do this for less then 1k mate. I just purchased a PR5 domain for 80$. I can get backlinks from PR5,6 sites for less than $50 every 6 months. If there is money in your niche and you expect to make money then throwing money towards ranking is highly recommended. Listen, i have a client who pays me $2000 p/w just to rank his site. Its worth it for him because when he makes a sale its BIG. You never mentioned budget in your original POST or what you were willing to spend to get there.

Yes, the private blog network is the right solution, i tried creating 10 web2.0 blogs with lots of posts and tier 2 links, which helped the client website(E-commerce) to get into top 10 for several keywords which are previously in 3+ pages of google results.
