Beware when using Tumblr - Do not get yourself banned

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my unfortunate incident of getting my NSFW blog banned in Tumblr so that you all will not end up in the same situation like

Also if anyone have experiences in surviving long and still making money in Tumblr, you are invited to share some experiences on how to survive in Tumblr.

This is the email from Tumblr:

Hello,

We've terminated your Tumblr account at <<tumblr address>> for spam or affiliate marketing. Per the policies you agreed to when creating your account, Tumblr prohibits such activity.

Don't put deceptive links or dubious code in your posts. That includes using Javascript to inject unwanted ads in blogs, or embedding links to interstitial or pop-up ad services. Don't use deceptive means to generate revenue or traffic, or create blogs with the primary purpose of affiliate marketing.

Unfortunately we can't restore accounts that have been terminated for violating our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines.

Monetizing methods:
Linkbucks - Interstitial Ads upon leaving my tumblr
PlugRush - Slider Widget and Popunder
Adult Friend Finder - Flash banner at the side + some links in the caption of my photo posts
Banners - Some misc static banners to Paid Adult Sites
Referral - Some links to sign-up as affiliates under me in Linkbucks and PlugRush

Spam:
Only recently I tried to do some comment blasts us Scrapebox with backlinks to Tumblr
I typically post about 50-100 post/day so I not sure if they consider it spamming.

Pop Up's (Plugrush,juicy ad's )are not accepted by tumblr from a long time if you want to use such affiliates network better get a website and use it with tumblr you won't have any problem but if you do that with .tumblr is will be surely terminated.

Thanks for the advice Roshaen. Any idea if using PlugRush without pop-up or pop-under is ok? EG: using a simple slide-in banner?

I had Linkbucks/Clicksor/Ero Advertising for more than a year .. wasn't really active all the while .. the major changes was switching from clicksor to plugrush with pop-unders .. and some comment blasts

Just be careful .. and like nanavlad said .. with Yahoo's purchase I expect there may be some "cleaning up" too

Tumblr acquired by Yahoo.. And then Penguin 2.1 targeted Tumblr as well.
So I don't think Tumblr will be used by many now. Most of us (webmasters) will be avoiding that website.

Just wanted to share my experience with Tumblr as well.

I have a few blogs that are in the sexy niche and the "not so sexy" niche. On some occasion, both niche will get banned regardless of what links I post and some others will slide by. It's really a hit or miss; this is why I always recommend creating lots of accounts so that you have one to fall back on.

Unfortunately, monetizing your blog with those method is asking for a ban, and I'm sure you have already heard this but I'll say it again anyways: Use your Tumblr blog to drive it to your moneysite, which contains those monetizing technique. This won't guarantee you not getting banned, but it will decrease the likelihood of so.

So, does Tumblr allow you to just have 'regular' link to outgoing url's? Also, I thought they still accept ads on blogs. If someone clicks on an ad, surely that's probably an affiliate link, etc. What's actually allowed on that site now?

In my experience, of all the major social networks, tumblr is the least effective at actually generating a ROI. And now they've pretty much eliminated most of the feasible NSFW money-making methods. I'm now down to one fashion niche blog with 10k+ followers and high engagement, and I think I'm just going to abandon tumblr altogether. But even the effort of selling the blog hardly seems worth my time.

I've seen tumblr eliminate huge blogs for minor infractions with no recourse.

If you've got a quality blog, and your posts provide relevant value, you'll most likely be fine. I've used plenty of affiliate links in my posts (several at a time) with zero problems, but I've got an established blog with a customized theme.

I'm expecting Tumblr to start really sucking soon now that Yahoo has their grubby paws on it.

From taking away site explorer, to giving me a hard time with my spammy email accounts, to just having the most terrible search results, most of their activities I can think of end up sucking for me personally.

Just use your own domain instead of tumblr and you will be safe.

Tumblr still can be monetized just like Twitter or Facebook, linking out to an "authority" site where your traffic reaches an Adsense gallery is going to be the safest bet now.

But as easy as Tumblr blogs are to grow, even not in the NSFW niche, you should still at least give it a crack.

Tumblr has been doing this for a long time, adult blogs struggle the most due to their suggestive content, and while it's easy to make money from these blogs, Tumblr will always view it as spam/affiliate marketing. The key is to rinse and repeat as often as you can. Never monetize NSFW Tumblr blogs, send the traffic from your blog(s) to your own self-hosted site, then fill your site with Plugrush, Linkbucks, Juicyads, etc. This way you can get returning traffic.

If your Tumblr blog gets banned (and it likely will eventually), create two more blogs to take it's place. It's a numbers game, and as long as you cover your tracks with URL shorteners and different proxies, your blogs will survive for a longer while.

Tumblr is a dangerous game. I think the best thing to do is to set the permalinks to your own blog and try to build a following on your own blog not hosted by tumblr.

I was using a service called pornblogr for hosting my blogs. It was nice because they have their own search engine which got me some traffic+I was pointing my tumblr blogs to the pornblogr blog and it's pretty good.


just wondering as anyone tried watermarking their images with your website link instead having actual links?

maybe that'd work.
