and for whitehat onsite seo, your keywords should be present as 1-3% of the site's text, and in the description meta tag, the keywords tag and the title tag (ps. i'd love to see a php technique similar to that that allows you to pull meta keywords tag from tags function, i've tried before, but it outputs the html into it, i had to be trying wrong)

well taktical, if you look at the code, the first part of it is static, ie. you fill that in and it stays the same, allowing you to use that technique to increase clickthroughs from organic search, the title gets appended to the end, that way google doesn't disregard the page for having duplicate meta description tags

so in addition to the meta tag/description you put in, you'll ALSO had the page's title (i.e. the keyword) to the back of it? and this is effective?

if you make sure to include keywords and phrases in the article title, (and thus in the page title) then yes, it is, primarily for the sake of having google recognize that it's not the same description tag on each page (webmaster tools sitemap section shows an error when they detect that, and i've had them only index 1 page of a site before because of it, this stopped that) it also seems to help with onpage seo because not every page on your site is going to be targeting the same keyword set, so you need the keyword target for that page appended to the description tag, and since you already are titling your post with the keyword set, your title is the obvious choice

one of the nicer things about it is that it also pulls the category title, author title, page title, or tag title for those pages as well, helping to make those pages appear as unique content (and if you are using custom excerpts, your cat, tag cat, and author pages will have unique content) giving you more pages of unique and keyword relevant content for your site, helping your google ranking

i'm glad i decided to chime in here, i had totally forgotten to check the tags and categories boxes in the sitemap generator for about 14 sites in my network, mentioning this reminded me, my network is now over 6,000 pages of high authority content stronger, thanks

Matt Cutts has recently said tag clouds and over zealous tagging is being treated by Google as keyword stuffing. He said they used to not really care about tags but now they are examining them closely and if you do it wrong you will get a penalty. My guess is they are sick of all those tag plugins picking hundreds of words and tagging. Anything automated Google ends up taking a dim view of. If you aren't sue about your tags I would just leave them alone. I don't tag any of my blogs and I do just fine.

what do you put in the robots.txt file so that it ignores all tag and category pages?

I normally find that it works better than sticking noindex in the meta and I personally think having as little plugins is the best way

Also,I have my own rule of thumb on, is that I like to make things as simple as I can for Google, why tell them to search through a handful of pages when they normally read the robots before anything else anyway?

Another thing is that when I use meta noindex I find it still indexes the URL without content but with robots they tend to ignore it completely

unless you're using wordpress as a cms for a informational database and your search function is limited to the tags on the posts (yes, that is a real scenario i had) i would suggest no more than 4 or 5 tags per post, and make sure that no category page has the same posts as the tag pages, and utilize custom excerpts (not the auto generated ones) and doing that you can dramatically inflate page count, and increase indexed pages on the site as well

i have a series of 11 sites that are all searchable technical databases, and yes, the posts have sometimes upwards of 20 tags on them, and yes, the tag pages are indexed (average indexed pages for each of those sites is over 700), and yes, depending on the search anywhere from 3-7 of those sites show up on page 1 for the targeted keywords, and they target a total of over 70 keywords in the same niche. only wikipedia, amazon and a fortune 50 company outrank them (some searches there are other fortune 100 companies i haven't pushed off page 1)

and the fact that those sites haven't had a thing done to them for seo since 2010
tag pages if used right can be a godsend

Again, I stress the fact that having tag pages indexable is good and useful but ONLY if you pay a lot of attetion to the type of listing pages they produce. For most people this is a lot of hassle so it is better to just noindex them.

utilize custom excerpts, make sure you don't have any two tags with the same content, make sure you aren't obviously keyword spamming, and if you do this...
DO NOT USE THE TAGS WIDGET
instead, have the tags show up at the bottom of the post

I would replace "automatic SEO Links" with "Smart SEO Links". But yea, most of these are still rockin and rollin.
