How do You Protect Your Eyes?

I just got the Google Chrome Extension "Clearly" (from evernote), and it's actually amazing for reading on the computer. It takes the content of the page and formats it so that it's easier on your eyes to read than from a website. It works for pretty much everything in terms of reading and browsing. At first I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference, but TRUST ME, it did.... I mean I at least find it much more enjoyable to be reading using Clearly on many sites than to read off the sites with all different spacing, fonts, and colors (whether their good or not, our eyes have to adjust over and over, right?).... its just simple black and white text and consistently formatted.

It may not be the complete solution to protecting your eyes, but I do feel like my eyes are less heavy for the last week.

Looks good but it doesn't seem to work with BHW. It just shows me the first post (OP).

This is weird, I just tested it and it's only letting me see the first post as well, but I'm positive I've used it before and it shows me all of the posts, I remember finding it annoying that I had to go back to the original forum page (not in Clearly) to go to the next forum page (although I expected that). I'm going to send an e-mail to support and ask them what the deal is.

What about special glasses from Gunnar? Have you ever tried? It looks promising.

I've been on a computer for 20 years, with usually 10 hour days.

My eyes are fine. computer screens don't ruin your eyes.

Read the book the bates method. Its about a optician, who carried out ranges of experiments and basically concluded that your eyes are always in top condition.
(unless you have a degenerative disease or damage them)

He gave his patients exercises to do, and there is many well known people who used this method and fixed their eyes. If you 'exercise your eyes' on close up screen then the muscles in the side of your eyes adjust the shape of your eye balls to accommodate.

This means your muscles for far sight need to get exercised to.

If you think this bollocks, try squinting your eyes to see something in the distance. You will find that suddenly you can see it. If your eyes were goosed then squinting would make no difference.

Anyway this guy done thousands of test on patients, and we are all now getting 'conned' into buying glasses. If you ask an optician these days 'can you do exercises?' they just laugh, Obviously, they want to SELL YOU GLASSES.

If we all done eye exercise then nobody would buy glasses!!!!

If you wearing glasses, and you don't want to, you've been ripped off.

The rods and the cones in your eyes never break, and stay in top performance throughout your life, in 95% of people.

Has eyesight been getting worse as screen pervasiveness has increased?

I don't know, think about all the people that need glasses. There are so many of them(seriously, wtf, how is that evolutionarily possible), but I don't think I've heard of their eyesight getting worse either due to screens.

I think the issue is focusing too hard on something that's too close to you for too long, it stresses certain muscles while not developing others.

If anyone has concrete data that screens themselves are a problem that creates more eye problems as opposed to, say, a watchmaker constantly looking at the little pieces very close for hours on end, please post it as it's something that I am very interested it.

Like i said in my previous post mate, checkout the bates method. The guy done so many experiments, and fixed all his patients eyes over the course of 6 months with exercise and technique. He would sell them glasses to help them when they started, but aimed to get them glasses free every time.

He actually done this 100 years ago, so thanks to the 'evolution' of marketing, everyone getting ripped off, lol

See it now, you posted like riiight before i did :)

wikipedia'ing the bates method as we speak, thank you thank you

learning the method of bates

Great to hear mate!!

It doesn't say too much positive on the subject on wikipedia
(probably written by a damn optometrist.)

However the squinting of the eyes proves it. Another thing you can do is if you look at a far away object and can't quite make it out, like a bus number, put your finger and thumbs together, on both hand, and create a really small vision hole.

Then look through it with one eye, and make tiny adjustments with your fingers, until the object is visible. Do this with both your eyes on a regular basis, and then i'm sure you'll then have the same problem as me. 20/20 vision!! hahaha

This is the best and most important thread I've read on an internet forum so far. No kidding.
I don't have much problems with my eyes right now, but a half year ago they did hurt a lot.
So I decided to get contact lenses, flux, a new screen, and Gunnar's gaming glasses which I use 14 hours a day and it helped a lot!

I prefer not to take any breaks and get fresh air, but sometimes the real world forces me to do it. When my eyes is getting too red and hurts I will turn off the computer even though it hurts my feelings.

Could you give some more details about how we can exercise our eyes? This sounds very interesting

Regularly look away from your screen.

Regularly look at long distance things, that you either can't properly see or make out.

Use the pinhole finger method i explained above to force your muscles to stretch.

Look at sometime close then switch to object far. Repeat this 10-20 times, and make the switch fast, and keep your eyes focused for 10 seconds before you switch.

They were the ones that worked for me, there are others.

Has anyone tested and seen any improvement with the pinhole glasses? I know these ones for a long time, If I remember well the first time I've heard about the pinhole glasses was from a TV commercial but as I don't believe in what is advertised on TV commercials I never bought them. I've made a bit of research on the internet about this subject but could not find something relevant to make me want to buy them.

What I like about Panther28 is that he is more than just a friend to me?

Why? Because he tells it how it is, not how many want it be, Panther28 is a REALIST

I have a chronic eye condition I am handling work wise all be it with big breaks thanks to a BIG SCREEN and BIG TEXT?

But I will tell you how I am coping. I have changed my diet ? no meat ? no junkfood ? no sugar ? no Coca Cola and the like?

But having spent 17 years living in the Orient one learns rapidly that western health care is not all it is cracked up to in fact 99 times the prescription you get is to keep your condition at bay on repeat medication. Surprising when you think about the law makers in the West prefer you have a medical condition that they do not want to cure as they have to MAKE MONEY OUT OF DRUGS.

My new diet veg and fruit and omega 3 fish et al

But here is what has given me hope?

Everyday I have a full clove of garlic and now that the sun is out every day in Spain refer again to Panther28 re bates method - Bates believed that the eyes were benefited by exposure to sunlight. He stated that "persons with normal sight can look directly at the sun, or at the strongest artificial light, without injury or discomfort.

I wear high quality UV sunglasses?

But I am hoping I am onto something with garlic and plan to step up to two full cloves per day?

Why? Easy I want and need my eyesight back and will do whatever it takes to achieve that.

After all garlic is good for you, so it is not going to harm!

Eye problems are hell to deal with, but I will never give up until I get back 20/20 vision.

NB
Garlic - Garlic can improve vision mainly because it contains sulfur which produces glutathione, an antioxidant that helps the lens of the eye. It acts like a radical-freeing scavenger. Alpha lipoid acid and MSM included in it helps when the eyes are exposed to UV lights. Garlic may contribute to keeping the blood circulating and keep cells in the eyes resilient. - Attribution to how-to-improve-eyesight.com/foods-for-eyesight/garlic-can-improve-vision/

Wait, Panther28, did you correct your eyesight by doing eye exercises or you are just claiming that they work?

As I mentioned before, I have downloaded an ebook with over 100 pages explaining how to improve eyesight by doing all sort of different exercises. In the book is also mentioned Bates and his famous exercise - palming. I find the exercises really have a relaxing effect on my eyes. Unfortunately, I haven't been consistent with the exercises so I can't tell you anything.

Despite that, I believe that the exercises do work, because there were these "flashes" when I saw clearly for like 5 seconds. It was also written in the ebook that it happens when doing eye exercises and that the more you do the longer the effect will be.

Also, I have read that ancient people used to work their eyes too. One exercise I remember is staring at a lit candle until your eyes start to water. I tried it, and it really cleared my eyes from red to white pretty much instantly.

What about special glasses from Gunnar? Have you ever tried? It looks promising.
I have them but do not really like them. I have heard that it works for some people though.

Yes, you are right, it is not actually the screen that causes the damage. Instead, it is the fact that staring at a close object, e.g. monitor, reading books, fatigue eyes. It is just that we, humans, are not supposed to sit in front of computers every day. I should also mention that computer screens fatigue our eyes faster because of the light coming from it. Just try turning the brightness to 100% and your eyes will become tired in no time.

To be frank you must eat fresh green vegetables and also lots of nature stuff with good iron and other compartments.
Getting a screen protector for pc or lappi screen is a must and also you must take a small break for at least 5 min for each hour to get some good vision in the future.

I've been in front of a PC for decades now and yes, my vision declined but i think it's because i'm getting old hahahahaha
I'm not 100% sure it has anything to do with computers.

With this said, i might reconsider everything...

I will add that getting quality sleep daily is also very important.

By the way, I have turned down the brightness of my screen even further and combined with regular breaks my eyes finally stopped drying out and I feel great!

From now on I will start doing eye exercises again! I just tried my friend's glasses and everything looked like in HD. Lol I may as well start a journey thread.

Is there a product or something to buy?
btw: I love that f.lux app.

Wait, Panther28, did you correct your eyesight by doing eye exercises or you are just claiming that they work?

Yes they worked perfect for me. I need to get a new eye test to check my results. I did get one before i done the exercises, an i only wish i was smart enough to think about doing like a documentary about how i fixed my eyes.

One of the best things that actually helped was that i got a job where i had to drive to work years ago, and since i had always worked in front of my screen, my eyes were bad long distance, but they improved as i kept looking at the furthest traffic light in the distance.

When i started my job, i struggled to see the number plate of 2 cars in front of me. I definitely can see further. I just went outside and tested myself. There was a number plate 10 cars away that i couldn't see. It took a few quick view changes, and i could then see it ok.

I also done the exercises. The thing is, i'm sure they aren't completely 20/20 right now, how could they be? I spend most of my time still looking at a pc screen, and i don't do the exercises rigidly every day like i used too.

However are they better at longer vision? Yes. Was this because of the exercises? Yes

If i wanted to get back to 20/20 vision then i would spend all day doing the exercises, for a month, but i don't need that. (i'm not a pilot)

Adjusting muscles doesn't really take more than a couple of months. We've all done weights and stuff so you already know this. Same principles with the muscles in your eyes.

If you have the discipline to do those exercises i posted above, then report back in a month, (remember to measure your starting point distance possibility.)

its easier just to make a conscious effort more of the time to look at things further away. I like to look at the tops of buildings, and hills, and people who are really far in the distance.

Most of the time people are walking along the street staring at the ground, or looking in shop windows.
