Have you thought about using 3rd party solutions for sending emails like MailChimp or Aweber? .. of course, it excludes spamming

As you can read on the /free-services page of "We Love Our Host" these services can make your site invisible in search.

to be honest - I have never needed a vps, so I'm not the best one to answer this question.

but I was paying for managed private server service (when I just started IM), provided by some small company (they have a contract with huge data centre) and omg... those guys were always ready to go extra miles and miles just to satisfy me

I would suggest dedicated managed servers by small companies - you might get some really unbelievable prices and service (except 24h support).
