I wouldn't say they are "new" or the best thing for SEO. Interacting with blogs can help SEO and having links in a comment whether they are do-follow or no-follow can be beneficial for their various reasons. The impact they have on a site's ranking would depend on the blog they were left on, how that blog is configured, and the authority of that site.

Blog commenting is like the old man of back link methods. Still works, ******** and all that, not to the same degree.

thanks. does it also serve as a good backlink to the site even if no one clicks on the link? does it at least sever as a back link.

The usefulness of a blog comment, or any form of backlink for that matter, is based on the personal experience of the individual providing you the information. I happen to find them very powerful. Others think they're not very useful anymore, and so build social links. I'm not saying I think they're the best - because no single backlinking method is, but like all forms of backlinks: They're good. They're worth it. You should never miss an opportunity to leave your link on a blog post.

Thanks so much verilix for answering and taking time to inform. I've been hearing and reading that google is liking blog comments even more now. I'll will put this into practice.
