Anchor Text Diversity Ideas

What percentage of your overall anchors are these generic keywords? Is 50% too high?

I'll give my best answer but it's more of an educated guess. We have to try and predict where Google is going rather than where it currently is. Generic anchors (including the naked url) typically take up more than 50% of the anchor text of a pure white hat website.

It seems that Google is learning to read the keywords around the anchor text now so it's not as important as it once was to have keyword targeted anchor text. This should expand to the point where Google is eventually taking into account the full article.

I personally try to mix in a lot of good LSI's on my anchor text on high quality sites though and leave the generics for things like Social Bookmarks.
