Money doesn't bring happiness, my ass!

Money is just a piece of paper with a number written on it but in todays government we need money to survive so In a way money does bring happiness but also is a reward for hard work.

Money is just a piece of paper with a number written on it

To be fair, it's the symbol of value. Currency is just a means of exchanging goods/services, without having to chop a cow in two, in order to buy a sheep and a goat instead.

Conan the barbarian is informed at the other end of the world, there is a very tall mountain and on it's summit there is a castle where an elderly sage lives who holds the absolute secret of life's collective wisdom.

He prepares his gear, straps on his shield, harnesses his sword and, wears his little underwear made of fur and starts making his way towards the mountain.

He crosses the Desert of Thirst, the Bottomless Ravine, the Thousand Wishes Well and after a 100 day journey trough the Tundra of zero degrees on the Kelvin scale, he reaches the foot of the Mountain of Wisdom, barely visible behind a thick vale of clouds and fog.

He begins his ascent, flexing his biceps, his veins popping-out while all the time his little fur underwear protects him from the cold.

He roars when, in a complete state of fatigue following the long ascent, he reaches the summit with the old sage's castle, appearing completely impenetrable, in full view.

The wooden gate is closed but he knocks it down roaring, with a blow of his shield.

The next gate, even heavier, requires an even stronger blow. The third, made of steel, is knocked down after a second attempt.

The final ultra-heavy and thick steel door collapses noisily as Conan's roar breaks the silence of the cold circular room, where the old sage is meditating with his fingers joined under his chin, sitting on this throne.

Conan approaches the center of the room and places his weapons at the feet of the elderly sage.

- Respect, old man. They told me that you possess the secret of all secrets..

- There are door knobs, Conan.

- You speak in riddles, old man...

Money is the root of all evil? The LACK of money is the root of MOST evil! The lack of money probably causes more misery, anxiety, stress and suicides than ANY other cause. Damn right we need money to be happy!!

OP, I feel like I want to punch you for opening this thread :bolt:

Let me clear something : at this level of my life, all (I mean all) problems are caused by lack of money.

Yea, you can say only love makes you happy, but fuck it all, there's no love when you got no money even for a few dates.

I'm not addicted to money, I'm just a random person, facing the same problems as most of people do.

I don't strive to be rich, I just want to have a regular salary, pay everything myself and not seeing troubles caused by money in my family.

All the things I want to do right now, everything I wish requires money, there's no way you can be 100% happy when you are young and struggle for lack of money.

In this fucking world, only rich get respect, at least what I can see in my country.

Lack of money causes : consumed nerves, lack of self-confidence and many many other problems. :heh:

a) Why not?
b) Troubles are not caused by money, it doesn't come late at night to throw stones at your windows. Troubles are cause by lack of purchasing power. And lack of purchasing power comes from lack of production. And while you may not be responsible for that, you are responsible for making your situation better. So, in the end, troubles are caused by inaction.

Why would you want respect from people you look down at because they only respect people with money? Why wouldn't you want respect from people you admire instead?

You got me wrong, this happens in friendship also, I was surprised many times from persons I have reputed / called friends... I guess you are right, that's a good way to find who's worth it.

As DamageX mentioned a few posted back, money is merely a representation of value, not value itself. In the beginnings of civilization, people exchanged goods with goods. If one wanted a few mammoth 's stakes for dinner, he 'd exchange it for some goat milk or whatever. This process is very limiting because I might want the stakes but the person who has them might not like the goat milk but he preffers berries. I 'll have to find a third person who likes gota milk and has berries, exchange them and then get the stakes. Tiresome!

So, as years went buy, people started trading things that were highly mobile and everyone (most) considered as valuable. It could be wine, gold, silver, slaves, whatever. As more years went by silver and gold became the most popular things people exchanged. Now, instead of storing my goat milk in a cold cave, I sell it and store gold. I can use this gold to buy the stakes and everything else, without having to worry if the other person finds it acceptable (because I already know it is so). Much easier!

In modern times, trading in gold is forbidden for political reasons and instead, people trade in paper and we call that paper money. There is no inherent value of paper money, other than that of the paper and the ink. The exchange value of paper money comes from the trust people have that others will accept it at any time instead of goat milk because it is issued by the government and they consider it a safe thing (i.e. they trust that the government will make sure it sustains its exchange value in the future).

So, money today is a token of value. It means that the holder can use it to purchase goods from sellers and the sellers will accept it because they can do the same later on. So, money is "purchasing power".

LMFAO, priceless!

I actually would love to have money, but I'd rather work for it than win it in some lottery. Therefore, I'm working right now. :)

2 quotes:
Money doesn't buy you happiness, but it sure makes misery a hell of a lot more comfortable.

I've had the unique perspective to see both sides of the coin: what it's like to have money and what it's like not to have money.

I know what it's like to be facing eviction and what it's like to make extra payments on the rent.

I know what it's like to have to use food stamps (government assistance) and what it's like to go out to eat every night if I choose.

I know what it's like to completely get my car serviced, tuned up, etc., and then what it's like to not be able to afford to put $5 of gas in my car.

And whether I was financially stable, or financially unstable, I still faced problems. I still dealt with death and sickness of family members, not so nice people, etc. But I can tell you this: I slept SO much better when I knew that I could pay all my bills, eat pretty much whatever I want and not stress over a medical bill if I were to get sick.

And now that I think about it, I was a happier and more confident person when I had money. I smiled more, laughed more, what people said about me (the bad things) didn't bother me one bit and best of all: I was able to give back a lot more, something I couldn't do when I was broke, I was barely able to give to myself.

So while technically, yes, money can't bring you happines, only true happiness can from within yourself, money definitely plays a strong role on your path to that happiness and if you think it doesn't, you're kidding yourself.

And the 2nd quote (this has been said in varies ways in the thread already): Money doesn't buy you happiness, but I rather cry in my Ferrari.
