Stupidest SEO myths?

It does matter. You have a specific way that you build those links and you are in a specific niche. Link velocity is a multiplier not a signal by itself.

Link juice velocity matters, not link velocity.
A stable link velocity (somewhat anyway) is important to a degree... besides social "signals" it's one of the least important ranking factors I've found though.

It does matter. You have a specific way that you build those links and you are in a specific niche. Link velocity is a multiplier not a signal by itself. That means it only gets combined with other signals you have. Also there are niches that are filled with blackhat and everybody builds thousands of links daily so there it seems it doesn't matter. Esentially you can't think of velocity as building 100000 links in a week, period. You think of it as buildng 100000 links in a week and X, Y, Z, W, etc. factors are <insert list here>. Many links very quickly can kill a site but it can rise another one that has a different combo of factors and signals.

I always liked the one: "This strategy works for me, it should work for you too" Every site/situation is a specific case, there is not an end all single SEO strategy

You're wrong, my niches are extremely varied, and the amount of domains i have up is huge, same thing will work every time when executed correctly, feed the algo what it wants, and it will react the same way, whether you are trying to rank anything in the payday loans or weightloss niche, same thing applies.

Last company I worked for, they'd just recruited a new web marketing director. When I asked about his SEO plans he replied "SEO takes care of itself". He didn't last long.

The biggest myth ever perpetuated, people believe it was fact:

"You can't rank if you have ANY duplicate content on your website"

Another on is that using WordPress
Pretty permalinks structure actually
helps, when in reality it hurts you because
it slows down your site via making WordPress
parse heavily, the default is WordPess Permalink
is the way to go, you will notice increase speed
in your frontend and backend of your WordPress
site in that the default goes directly to the "Page ID"

that's quite a long myth, but
why do
you
write like
this?

+1. News sites rank and half of the stories are duplicates.

Mashable/Tech Crunch etc are literally websites of rewritten press releases.

That's what a journalism degree get's you these days; the same exact role as a VA.

The problem is that people do not even understand what the fuck duplicate content is. Duplicate content is having mostly the same information on multiple pages of a single site, and it will get you a penalty.

If you put up a site promoting flashlights, and have 20 models listed with every page exactly the same except for the model numbers, then you have created duplicate content and the site will not rank.

When there are multiple copies of something this is "distributed content" or "syndicated content", and as many people here point out Google has no problem with it.

Duplicate content will get a penalty, syndicated content is a non ranking factor for the most part.

If duplicate content really was what most people believe it is, there would only be one copy of anything on the Internet.

So... I can create a blog, copy hundreds of pages of wikipedia, paste them in my site and I can rank that? (not defying you, just trying to clarify for myself)

Just because someone's a JrVIP here they must know what they're talking about

Whether or not you can rank Wikipedia content I do not know. Google does respond to DCMA requests for content as well as media complaints. but essentially, yes you can copy content from anywhere, word for word, and use it to rank on your website with. It will not harm your site by itself.

In fact, it is quite easy to outrank the original publisher, and there are many threads in this forum about this very thing.

I imagine you could go overboard, but the essence of article marketing is that people would use your articles, and give you a link. Only, a lot of them never bothered with the link and there are thousands of copies of millions of articles on the web.

If you have an otherwise quality site, copying content, or reporting events in your niche, as I like to call it, means you are keeping your readership informed about your niche. Google sees this as a contribution to the web, and rewards your participation. You will never be punished for adding to the discussion of your niche, if you do it in a way that quality websites do. This is especially valuable if you get hit with a manual review.

In this thread you are hearing people say the same thing, they can copy damn near anything and rank it if they know SEO.

I concur with them.
It's just not duplicate content.

What are you guys opinions on competing with big adwords spenders/retail giants such as department stores? specifically in an ecommerce arena.

The reason being is that Im debating in my mind whether to launch and invest in a site that will compete with such. The site will be better in everyway and more niche focused, however Im beginning to think the game could be rigged.
