im fucked

Medical science isn't really advanced when it comes to chronic pain.

Very true and it's a complex area that surprisingly doesn't have that much research put into it.

I have had my share of back problems which is alright now. But, try to consult a few more specialists and hopefully you can get the best advice for your condition. Remember, when it comes to health problems, you should always try to get a few opinions from various specialist docs.

Make sure they are specialists that work in the chronic pain area - this is critical because surprisingly (to me anyway) many specialists (GPs, surgeons, rehab people and so on) have as much knowledge of chronic pain as the general population. At least this is the case in AU. They're used to treating non-chronic pain that lasts less than three months which is completely different to someone whose had pain for years.

You can look up wikipedia if you want to know how it's different but suffice to say it can have tremendous negatibe impacts on your life and if you and the people treating you are ignorant of this it doesn't turn out well.

the pains clinic as we call it here in the uk is next on the list .

Good. That's what really helped me and where the doctor was that said he can't help me unless I medicate properly. It might sound stupid but I just had no understanding of why things were happening: why I was getting more and more depressed, why "solutions" being recommended weren't working (getting back to studies, work force etc).

I have to admit I was sort of a bullheaded twat ... I associated pushing through pain with manhood, pushing through pain levels from my former life as a fitness fan with getting somewhere. So I would sit down until my back was screaming, do gardening and otherwsie completely ignore the pain and just thought, I dunno, "I'll get used to it".

I completely missed why my my life was getting worse and worse because of it so it was kind of scary to keep going downhill further and further without having a explanation. Even though I was "wearing it" every single day. Like I said, bullheaded and stubborn.

I do the Stronglifts 5x5 and it's amazing for your back. Read the .pdf

You start with no weights on the bar and load 5 pounds progressively. You may feel like a wimp at first, but after two months you'll be lifting more than everyone else and have the best posture of your life. Also invest in some Vibram Komodosports

Disregard cigarettes, start the good stuff. :)

Yup, pretty simply really. You even answered the problem yourself.

There's a need and the solution is weight lifting to help with your back muscles. The hindrance is smoking so remove the hindrance in order to get to the solution.

Yeah heh ... former smoker here myself actually. Took five attempts to quit.

Quitting is easier said than done obviously. IMO only way to do it is cold turkey, the nature of the addiction means cutting back gradually just prolongs the extremely unpleasant process and to some extent so does nicotine replacement therapies. I understand the principles behind why they're supposed to work but for many smokers it's like an alcoholic trying to quit by having an IV drip in their arm giving them a constant dosage of alcohol. The brain is used to getting a huge amount of nicotine/alcohol in a short period which results in a pleasant rush of feel good neuro transmitters - being on a constant dose just leaves the brain permanently screaming for a large amount - ie. a drink or a smoke. Which is probably why alcoholics aren't cured this way. Of course people do quit smoking via NRT although I don't notice many smokers who quit when they "cut back".

Also I've done extensive physical rehab for my injury and I do weightlifting now: really be very careful and consult an expert (physio or PT with experience in back injury) to exercise with you. Exercise can have positive benefits but it can also really f*** you right up ... just saying "weights will fix it" is really not the way to go. People without injuries screw their backs up without good technique, you really need to be careful with a severe back injury. Not saying weights is out but it comes down to your situation completely.

Keep your head up proxygo and whatever you do take care of pain levels (it sounds like you are). Long term chronic pain is no joke. Be careful with alternative therapies, snake oil salesman, both well intentioned and otherwise, flock to people with desperate problems. Although you probably know this already.

Stop blaming your non-stop complaining grumpy threads on your health condition. They're a lot of people dying from terminal diseases with a great attitude on life.

With that said, I do hope you get better cuz I don't want anyone to suffer and I do sympathize with your problem.

One thing that helped me the most that I hope can help anyone willing to try is diet. Seriously try a fruit and veggie filled diet without the smoking and you will see a huge difference in your attitude and health. Mix that with some slow and increasing exercise and you could be fixed in no time. It's not easy but it works.

many years ago i fell over backwards and cracked my back on concrete.
My story too. After a gym injury in jan it get worse.

What helps me a lot is massage and yoga. If you can't find a good teacher I can recommend you this book
amazon.com/Light-Yoga-B-K-Iyengar/dp/0805210318

Seriously give it a try. At least read the book.

Years ago a Chiropractor looked at the x-ray he claimed to have just taken and asked, with authority, "So, how long ago did you break your back?" Well, after a confused conversation we decided that the motorcycle accident I had 10 years prior must have resulted in breaking my L3 vertebrae. I had soreness for a few weeks, but didn't think I had broken it.

So for years afterwards, I went around telling anyone that would listen all about my broken back. I saw the x-ray myself. Even the Neurologist the Chiropractor sent me to had a copy of the x-ray of my broken vertebrae.

Then one day, I found myself in the middle of getting an MRI of my lower back. As soon as I climbed out of that tube, I went over to the Technician and asked if I could see my broken L3 vertebrae. I wanted to see if it had gotten any worse over the last few years.

The Technician scanned and moved around the images for a while, looking here & there and couldn't find any evidence of a break. Sure there was compression between L3 and L4, but that was do to standard-issue disk degeneration. I kept insisting that it was broken. Even wondered out loud if he had the wrong guy's MRI. Tech stayed calm and explained to me patiently that there was no way it was someone else's. Had my name & SSN all over the images.

Medicine is part guesswork and part fraud. I wouldn't put too much stock in the opinions of any one person, Doctor or otherwise. For the most part, you are the face that is associated with a 15 minute block of time they have to "get through", and the faster they can get rid of you, the faster they can get to the next one, and the next one. Curing you is secondary, and properly informing you of your condition isn't even ON the list; that's the receptionist's job. And she's REALLY busy right now, so if you want her opinion of your medical condition, you'll have to leave a message at the sound of the beep.

hi proxygo,
i would suggest u to try yoga, if u dont mind, search a lil in you-tube about a couple of particular yoga postures called bhujangasana and shalabhasana.

i hv seen many ppls including a cousin of mine, who were hurt like u, and suffered a lot, are either completely or relatively okey after practicing these two poses.
since you are injured, i would like to inform you that:-
1. in case of bhujangasana u will see in videos and pictures, the person would lie on his/her chest, then would place his/her palms just besides the breasts, each side of the chest, and would rise his upper part of body, and take a posture where his/her lower body below waist line would remain on the floor while the upper body above waist line would rise to take a shape of 'hooded cobra', thus performing bhujangasana viz 'cobra pose'
its needless to say if u try it, on very first day u wont be able to rise up as much as u should, but u must not create pressure, rise only as much as u can afford without causing pain and hold the level for 10-15 seconds and the lie down, repeat 4 times, and lie down for 2 minutes, do it for 7 days, then if u see improvement, increase the 10-15 second time to 25-30 second times, with 4 such repetitionsmild.jpgproper.jpg

here i hv added two pics, the first one shows a gentleman is doing 'mild ' version of the posture, while on the second image, u see the lady is doing 'proper' posture, u should start with mild and as situation improves, u carry on to proper version.

2. while doing shalabhasana u r again supposed to lie down on ur chest, place both ur palms either both side of or body, in a relaxed manner, or for more support, place both of arms under ur thigh , while the palms facing upward. now rise one of ur legs backward, hold it where it is within ur affordable limit, count 10 or wait 10 seconds, and relax, and repeat with alternative leg, rise it back ward, hold for 10 seconds, and relax 1 minute now, and repeat 4 times and then finally relax for 2 minutes.
half.jpgin this picture u see the leg is stretched fully, u dont want to do it on one go, rise as much as u can easily and then relax.

i hope it will fix ur problems faster than u can ever imagine, because as i hv experience with yoga, i know it, but since u hv an injury and i dont suppose that u will be able to practice these yoga asanas under guidance of a qualified yoga expert, so its better if u consult with ur doctor or if u want to try on ur own, just keep one thing in mind 'never ever stress, rise as much as u can" with every successful session ur ability will improve and with in a month time, gods willing, u will be up and doing again.

ps- sorry for my english, its not my mother tongue u know :)
