web and graphic designers!! what tools do you use???

Hey folks,

Straight to the point...
My little brother is an artist. he is pretty incredible in what he do. he is studying arts actually and all his artistic work is awesome. I realy think he can expand his skills to the web -something related to web designing, psd, logos, videos, landing pages....

What I need to know is this. What tools can I get and give him so he can start playing with them?

I dont care if I can get a torrent or if I need to pay xxx for them. I guess photoshop is the first one right? I know about sony vegas too for video editing... but nothing more lol

I was originally a graphic designer at a young age and then I went into making websites and that led me to where I am today as an internet marketer.

The tool I used to get into web development after I was efficient at photoshop was dreamweaver which is a website creator. It's good to be proficient in photoshop so you can design your own websites and then you code them into HTML using dreamweaver. Good tool

The whole adobe suite is the only thing you will ever need for this. Dreamweaver,Photoshop Illustrator, etc.
You might want to learn how to use addons, shortcuts and actions to speed up your work

Painttool Sai is really good for drawing/sketching/otherwise real artwork

If he's interested in doing 3d, get zbrush. For tutorials on 3d, Digital Tutors is the best place to start.


A tablet is great as well. Works for drawing and 3d. Entry level ones start at around $75 (Wacom Bamboo). The mid-range is the Wacom Intuos3 or Wacom Intuos4 ($300-$700). High range is Wacom Cintiq ($800-$1400) which is due to on-tablet screen, extreme sensitivities and size.

You can try PSPAD instead of NOTEPAD. It's way better. And it's free. (i think so)

Quick overview:

Photoshop, Illustrator (graphics), Notepad++ (for html, css, javascript, php, jquery...), Firebug (debugging), Wamp (local testing), Filezilla (FTP), Subversion/SVN for bigger projects (versioning, Github might be better, but takes so much work to set up i don't even bother lol)

You'll always be good with an Adobe program, but most professional web designers prefer to work in a simple editor like notepad++, where dreamweaver can be good for starters thanks to the easy editor (most html/css becomes point & click) and the built in ftp tool.

I have been developing and designing websites for 5 years.

I only use AdobePhotoshop it should be latest and Notepad++ for coding.
