I agree. Maybe, at times, Dreamweaver is too robust, and you can use Notepad++ for coding needs. But most of the things you need can be found in Adobe Suite.
 
For banner and logo my choice illustrator,
for layout Photoshop is the best,
and for enhancing photos photo mania is the best.
I have read a lot of books on Photoshop and web graphics your brother must do it..
 
Those suggesting After Effects/Premier are truely clueless - They are for video unless I am missing something ???

I use aptana Studio 3 - photoshop - Notepad++ and Filezilla.

If you are using dreamweaver do not let it write code for you. At all, ever.

The Adobe Creative Suite is pretty much the standard, their only main competitor by a long shot is really Corel. The good news is if he is in college, you can usually get the Adobe applications dirt cheap from your college book store provided you have a valid student ID. When I was in school I only paid like $10 or so for Photoshop.
 
illustrator i wld say, vectors are the in these days and web is all about layout. content is king frankly

If he's interested in doing 3d, get zbrush. For tutorials on 3d, Digital Tutors is the best place to start.


A tablet is great as well. Works for drawing and 3d. Entry level ones start at around $75 (Wacom Bamboo). The mid-range is the Wacom Intuos3 or Wacom Intuos4 ($300-$700). High range is Wacom Cintiq ($800-$1400) which is due to on-tablet screen, extreme sensitivities and size.

Couldn't agree more. These are pretty much all the tools you need. Tablet is great but not nec. :)
 
He's defintely going to need photoshop, adobe illustrator and dreamweaver. Wven with just those 3 programs, you can make anything you need
 
I am using Photoshop cs5 and coreldraw..for some reason i don't like illustrator.
