Have you ever had a 'Lucid Dream'

So I was looking around kickstarter (super bored) and I came across this project called Remee. (Can't post a link, on my iPad).
Lucid dreaming for those who dont know is where you are in a dream and you know it's a dream, so this means you can control the dream and do all kind of wacky stuff. Seems pretty fun for a dream, and it may sound stupid but I'm considering pre-ordering one of them, lol.
So has anybody here actually had a lucid dream? Tell me about it.
Of course... I have them regularly. I usually lucid dream in the final few minutes of my dream :) as in, I lucid dream every second day.

When I was a small child, I learned to lucid dream to handle nightmares. If a dream was becoming too scary, my mind would take over and change it. It is much easier to lucid dream as you are waking up and slowly becoming conscious. I make all sorts of things happen in my dreams; a common thing I do is give myself superpowers to get out of a sticky situation (e.g. super speed to run away) and then I also change the situation to make it more pleasent, dreams tend to be not particularly nice (though no longer scary since I'm not a kid) so its nice to lucid dream to fix them :)

Once I start to lucid dream, I will shortly wake up. As I lucid dream, my vision becomes more and more fuzzy. It is hard to maintain your grip on a lucid dream unless you legitimately train yourself.

People who lucid dream naturally in my experience are people who already have wacky dreams. My dreams are completely off the wall. Hell I dream in third person, that is how strange I am.

When it comes to "sleep paralysis", well I've tried lucid dreaming a few times but it's definitely not as easy as they say. I never managed to get into "sleep paralysis", probably not even close, I felt as if I was no longer able to feel my body after like 2 hours of laying in bed, but the moment I decided to move, I was able to move... I've tried a few times but then I just give up because it gets really boring laying in bed for hours doing nothing.

I know someone who experiences sleep paralysis. It is terrifying. Why would you want to experience it? I sure wouldn't, it is not nice to be unable to move.

I suffer from Hypnagogia, I don't know if that is the same thing. But I believe it is something similar, when I wake up from my dream I am still in it and I can see and feel everything as if it was real. It is always bad dreams so I cannot say it is something I long after. It varies from snakes, spiders barb wire in my bed to guys hitting me with electric rods. First time I experienced this was about 7 years ago when a black shadow figure came rushing through the wall next to my bed and tried to grab me, this was probably one of the worst since I hadn't experienced anything similar before and I thought it was real. I don't think I have ever been so scared before as I was that night, I remember running out of my room screaming and everyone in the house didn't understand what I was screaming about (probably thought I was crazy). I either get mad with rage or extremely frightened depending on the dream, I have been physically injured by theese dreams. When in this state of anger I cannot feel any pain so it is when I come to again and really wake up and understand that im actually kicking or hitting the floor/wall that the pain hits me like a lightening bolt. One time I kicked my wall with the toes straight forward and broke the toe, the pain was insane when I came to. I can feel, and see it as if it was completely real so even after all theese years of terror I am still not capable of knowing it is real or not. Even after one of theese dreams I cannot go back to bed for awhile because im considering the fact that it might just be real and I might have a snake there under the covers or whatever it now may be. On a bad night this could happen to me up to three times in one night, but usually it is around 1-3 times a week.

So all in all what I wanted said was that this is not to play around with, it might not always be a pleasant dream/feeling. And I assure you from personal experience this is not fun or pleasant in any way, I can definitely see that a person with a weak heart can suffer from a heart attack.

I hope you could endure my wall of text and that it wasn't all to off-topic, English is not my mother tongue so please bear with me. Thanks :)

Yeah, I got it, many times, but there are few that used to be my favorites and I haven't had them for a long time, I think that my stress is affecting my dreams, I am not used to sleep as much as I used to, anymore.

Let tell you my favorite one: as a horror movie fan I had one that was very frightening. I knew that it was a dream, I was scary there as hell, but I didn't want to wake either. I wanted to keeping dreaming. But suddenly, I woke up, actually, my mom, woke me up.

I hated that.... Seriously. It was all that I want in my life, to live into my own horror movie, and I got it, made by me, -- my own nightmare. And mom took it away from me.

I asked her: "Why did you do that?"

She told me: "Well, you were screaming and shaking yourself over the bed. And this for me was very weird, because I'd never seen you acting that way".

I told her: "Please don't do it again, I wanted that, I was enjoy my nightmare".

She said: "Okay, next time, I'll leave...".

Well, no more I had a nightmare like that one. What a pity!!

I am not used to sleep as I used to, this is costing my favorite dreams and nightmares.

I was just trying to say that lucid dreaming isn't at all as easy as some people say, like in the above article, "sleep paralysis" within 20 minutes is not something that happens to me after 2 hours and apparently "sleep paralysis" is part of the experience before a lucid dream so it's something you will have to experience anyway so I'm not really sure what you're trying to put through with your reply.

To be honest with you, I see no point in stayin in bed for a few hours, trying to get such an experience. I'd rather write an article, fuck my girlfriend or anything else rather spending 2 hours of something that I'll never get back.
If this occurs naturally, it's another thing. But wasting time to do it, it's just...childish.

It's not something I do on a daily basis, some of you should think before you write. When I first found out about lucid dreaming I wanted to try it out because it definitely sounds very interesting and fun. It would be a pretty cool to sleep and get the needed rest while at the same time having fun or learning something through lucid dreaming rather than wasting half of your life sleeping.

Lucid dreaming can be quite a scare if you can't control it. I get sleep paralysis quite often, and during that time, hallucinations are very common for me. Additionally, the feeling of sleep paralysis is almost a feeling of fear and hopelessness, so you get scared and imagine bad things. I can control what I see, but even times when I plan to see certain things, I get fearful and see something else or try to wake up.

As for lucid dreaming itself, I've done it a couple times before. I haven't had time to learn exactly how to control it :\

Quick Thoughts:

I bought the Remee when it was on Kickstarter. (Still waiting on it). It works by helping you figure out you're dreaming without waking you up. Once you realize you're dreaming, then you can take control and do what you want.

Recommended by Tim Ferriss: It's a pill called Huperzine A, and is used for improving memory/learning. If you take it 30 minutes before bed, it increase your REM sleep meaning you have more dreams. It's like $10 for 60 pills, and you are only supposed to take it at most a few times per week. I actually took it last night and it was quite wild.

Here's my take on my experience.

What you are most likely commenting on is sleep paralysis. Were you able to move and did you finally kick your self out of it but felt like it took a very long time?

This is something I can do every day if I want it to happen by sleeping on my back. I have managed to control it for the most part and take advantage of it but unless you experience it for yourself and truly know the feeling of not being able to move you will never realize how scary it is.

I've had it up to three times in one night. Imagine that your body is an empty bottle being filled with water. As the water rises, you can feel it in your body from your toes up to your head. This takes a few seconds and during this time, you can wake up and kick yourself out of it very easy. But, since you are sleepy, or maybe because you want to, you go ahead and let that feeling reach your head. At that point, it has taken over your body and you are paralyzed, can't talk or move but you can move to an OBE (out of body experience) with practice. There have been many times where I have moved my body around and done weird things and then when I snap out of it, I am in my normal position. Often, I can look down on my body.

I've trained myself to make a funny noise when I have this so that my wife can wake me up. I can hear her talk but sometimes she doesn't try hard enough so I just sit there and keep making the noise until she wakes me up. I am so confident that during this time I can see even with my eyes closed, that I have asked her to make sure my eyes are closed, and while I am breathing funny, hold up some fingers to see if I can tell her how many. She is so sleepy though, it doesn't cross her mind (as you can imagine).

Only one time have I seen something unnatural. I once saw a short bald naked unisex man. He was a translucent green color and the longer I looked at him, the more transparent he became. He was beside my dresser staring at me. It didn't look like the UFO's we see on TV. The strange part about this, is that years later, I was talking to a co-worker from Peru about dreams and she told me she had a friend who has sleep paralysis and that one night, he saw a green creature outside of his skylight. This was before I told her my story.

Do I wish I could not have them anymore?

No, not really. I've become pretty good about controlling them but like I said, unless you have had one, you will never understand the initial fear that takes over when you realize you can't move. It's unlike anything else I have ever experienced.

As for dreams (which are what many have mentioned above), I can remember most of my dreams and recite them action for action almost all the time. I can wait until that evening and tell my wife a 5-10 minute story about my dreams. Sometimes, they are the stuff of Hollywood so I write them up. It's not until then that I realize how many details and just how much I recall.

I'll post one below just in case anyone is interested in the amount of detail I can recall. This is from a recent dream.

Here's a recent dream that I typed with detail. See bottom of comment above for full perspective.

Mike and Lindsey and sister were in it. And wife.
At building like school or store in basement. There to organize boxes.
Ramp led down to room and staircase.
Seashells arranged through room.
Mad at people because they were there but did not want to help clean.
People were there for a presentation of some kind.
Someone compared my attitude to someone else. Said it was abrasive but then mentioned the benefits.
One seashell was large flat shell. May have Been a plaster mold. Someone punched it and cracked it. I think they belonged to sister.
Asked person who I thought it belonged to. He said no and was pushing a large piece of furniture like a fireplace mantel or cabinet.
Many open/used/empty shipping boxes.
Pegboard shelves lined room with general household items. Told Mike to grab flashlight incase lights go out.
Lindsey had one setup on a beg that shined onto the area they were standing. May have been a helmet light.
They had a baby with them.
Room was round or square or hexagon.
Guards outside doors leading to ground made sure that people did not steal.
Once threat of tornado, I spotted it.
It threw a dairy cow to the right. Tornado was about half mile away.
I closed the door and said that I swear to god that I saw a tornado throw a cow. All believed and attempted to scramble into place.
Doors were closed instantly.
Ran towards wife but tornado hit before I could get to her.
No one lived. All die and I felt end of life/world as we know it. No pain.
Instantly was above tornado looking at it continue.
It left no debris and sucked up everything and everyone on earth.
Path was fiery red dirt like red dirt in large farmland. No tree to living plants. Nothing!
Somewhat recall there being three tornadoes side by side. At least one was fire or had fire in it.
Remember feeling like the world had come to an end and that the next phase was about to happen.
Felt as though I had been used by the Lord for a task
Remember thinking that I am happy to have accepted Christ when alive.
Woke up.
Eyes started tearing.
Too real...

To those guys who get a very bad feeling and get frightened in a powerful way but without being able to really pinpoint it and it is not the usual type of nightmare fear but different, more deep. It is your choice if you go on or you pull out (probably you will pull out of it because it feels wrong and no-no zone) but if you do go on and you start to experience wacked stuff that feels super real and you feel endangered remember this:

You are in control no matter what they want and do and they can only hurt you if you allow it. If it gets very bad say to them "I am not allowing you to do that. You can not hurt me". Do not say it in a whiny begging voice but on a firm tone and know they can not do anything to you unless you invite them, accept it or they trick you into it.

I'm not going to explain who "they" are as I don't really know who they are or what they are. I can tell you as a fact however that they are real and not a product of your imagination and not a dream. What happens (at least from what I can figure out) is you travel somewhere in a different dimension/place/world where you meet "them". They are not necessarily the same type all the time, they are different in what they want, feel, etc. If you pay attention you will realize you can feel what they feel to a certain extent - if they're scared of you and defensive-agresive, if they came to you with a purpose or you went to them, etc.

You are likely to have the natural tendency to go either in a nice place with nice beings where you feel awesome or in a bad place with beings that want to hurt you or they're scared of you and aggressive or anyway unpleasant to be there. Neutral places are a matter of you controlling your fear and them controlling their fear and neither of you having an agenda, thoughts or feelings which is bad for the other.

And to those who think i'm full of hippie shit, besides the fact that i know they are real beyond any doubt (it cant be explained only felt), after one "dream" where one of them grabbed my hand and tried to pull me down i had that hand and the entire arm almost completely paralyzed for the whole day after i woke up.

Also you may want to check out Paul McKenna's vids on youtube where he talks about the (good/nice) beings he met on DMT (dimetyltriptomine) trips. Seems DMT activates certain areas in the brain which allow us to perceive other dimensions. DMT gets produced at peak rates 2 times in the average person's life - when he is born and when he dies.

interesting thread,

may be a place to ask some questions too.
I don't dream(once in a long duration), or i don't remember them (i don't think this is the case). i don't know.

Can anybody explain whats wrong.

I'm lucky, i have always had the ability to control my dreams. i used to have my own mini dramas where i would pick up my dream from the previous night and carry it on. These days i dont have a huge variety of subject matters that i dream about, but that's entirely because i've become less enthusiastic about things.
:china:
When i was young i experienced many times the really scary pressure on your chest and the inability to move. I had some real terrifying experiences, so much so that i never sleep in an entirely blacked out room it just freaks me out, i'm also not a fan of certain types of horror movies.

I also know other people who have the same ability or who can lucid dream, all initially had bad experiences - inability to move, gasping struggling for breath, your chest being crushed as if some huge weight was on top of it, fighting for life and feeling like your soul was being ripped out of you.

If you intend to try lucid dreams be careful. Start off by asking for the protection of your God

and if you get into trouble command whatever it is to go to the light and start to pray.

if you get over the negative stuff then dreaming can be awesome much better than computer games!

you don't remember them. before going to bed and until you fall asleep think actively that you want to dream (and what you want to dream). after a few days you will remember. also start the dream actively with your imagination before you fall asleep so you can continue it asleep.

i used to have this dream that was like a movie series. lasted for over a year then a 2 year pause then i continued 2 episodes again. dont even remember what it was about just that i liked it.

if you are religious/believe in god and feel it gives you power that is a very good idea. commanding doesnt work well. they do not submit to your commands but if you are firm they will back off. also they are tricky (some) and will try to deceit you into doing stuff, going with them, going somewhere, etc. then if you are tricked you find yourself in another dream that is more unpleasant and feels much worse. asking from protection from whoever your angel, god, your parent's spirit, etc. can help.

i also like to maintain a "landmark" to light/up or where i come from for times when i adventure myself too deep. since i can travel from any place to any other place as long as i "see" it / have a landmark in it, i can pull myself out instantly. used to get lost a lot in the beginning as i didn't "see" as clearly or as far as now (now i dont see very clear either but is a lot better). i also dont get as scared since after a few encounters where i was terrified i managed to find power to resist everything there and i know that pretty much no matter what or where i end up I can not be "consumed".

"feeling like your soul was being ripped out of you" - some of them suck energy big time. like a man who's been in desert without water. in my case this feeling had also a lot to do with feeling lost there and weak. initially i had the thought that the "energy suckers" were evil. they do seem evil from every aspect you look at it. then i realized some seemed so just because where in a horrible place, lost, crammed packed, suffering, being "hungry" etc. so they just grab onto me like you grab on somebody that comes with water in the desert. By the way even living people suck energy (some of them) - you can tell because you feel very unpleasent around them, tired and kinda lost (cant concentrate well). Some suck it without knowing, some know they do it and is intentional. Happily i haven't met many and i'm glad because the only way i know how to stop them hurts them and i dont like to hurt them.

Thats what i would do .. :beerchug:

I wish I could lucid dream. I always start off thinking of something I'd love to dream about that night, and end up standing in the hall, with no pants, back in high school.

Well as youre back at school you might as well ask for your teacher to come and guide you - just a thought:D

I have them a couple times a month.

The problem most people have is that once they realize they are dreaming, they have a hard time controlling it, or they wake up.

A good trick is to visualize a couple seconds ahead... so like if you are standing on the ground and want to jump 1,000 feet up and fly around, just imagine yourself doing this then take a big jump. If you don't believe it it won't happen.

And if you feel like the lucid dream is fading away and you are waking, try to look at your dream hands... making your mind create your hands by looking at them, it will add detail to the dream and bring you back. You can also start spinning around, and your brain will start creating a new environment, making the dream more real.
