Over Optimization Penalty Launched Today

I think if enough IM ers got together and hammered the web with stuff it could bring Bing above google. Now to just get it started....

It seems like the results are way better now and things are starting to get better in SERPs.

Hope you are joking. Look at serps, sites with no content/garbage/copied content rank on the first page now.

My business site got hammered. Almost all keywords that were on page one are now on page five at best, many are completely off the chart. This was all original content and all manually created links.

I wish that I had the power to completely destroy a business with the press of a key like Google has. If I did I think that I would pick a company whose name starts with the letter "G"!

I think that I am going to be closing down my Analytics and Webmasters accounts. No sense in giving them anymore information to kill me with. Let them do a little work for it.

Totally agree with you mate. Let's create FB page and boycott Google. All the traffic and like sellers should join all together, we should work together and launch biggest anti-Google campaign. This can't go on like this. There should be a competition, one company shouldn't rule the world and destroy everything in one click just because they want so.

Please, we should discuss that seriously. We, IMers always try to give best experience to users, + we want money. But all that Google wants now is money and shitty content. We are very strong, all of us can lower Google's market share by 80% and maybe then they will come to mind. Inform your friends, your family, your relatives, create FB pages, create everything you can, it will be a huge anti-Google campaign.

I don't think we can bring down the market share of google by 80% but even a change of 1 percentage point is a great achievement.. Around 1 billion searches are made everyday through google.. and you need to cut down 800 million searches every day to bring it down by 80%, which is definitely not possible by a group of IMers. However, we should do something that makes google to stop and notice what is happening. even 1 percent drop is a big thing and with an united effort we can achieve it.

What's the point? Search will eventually become less and less important. Social Media is where people spend alot of their time on now. Also, Google's search is threatened by services like Yelp.

I'd say move on to social media but still do some SEO.

Why would Google fear Yelp? It's a review site and it's crap.

The point is to rise up and give Google the biggest reality check they've ever seen. With a single update, they can destroy people's lives and business. Google needs us, just as much as we need them. If we stop using their services and boycott, their revenue will tank too. Let's what happens when they lose a lot of money. They think they are untouchable, that's the issue.

If enough us rise, they will change their ways. We beat Washington's SOPA bill, we can beat Google.

Google is nothing more than a school yard bully, that needs to get it's butt kicked. :p

Ok on a serious note....

I ADMIRE your fortitude and desire to speak out against a large dog like Google. I am by NO MEANS an "uninformed" and ignorant person who does not participate in any of our civil duties (including voting) here in the U.S. I pay attention to business and politics, and yes, I vote in every election. Period.

I do, however, believe that under the current system, you can only get something done if there is a MASS uprising, or you have DEEP DEEP pockets. I'm not talking physical revolution or anything. I mean a big percentage of the masses speaking out.

Look I agree with you, Google are aholes and yes, they do have a monopoly.

I just don't see how the general public (or a specific subset like the senior citizens, gun owners, etc.) is going to make a big enough stink about it to get anything done. The reason is simple:

IT DOESN'T AFFECT THEM.

The average joe or jane types "XYZ" into google and he gets what he gets. Some tend to always click ads above or to the right of results. Others tend to just click on the first one or two results and that's that. If somebody wants to buy something, they do searches for that product/service, or visit sites they've already bought from (which is why amazon kills it because they have a LOYAL customer base), and that's that.

Unless a LARGE MAJORITY of google's search results remain TOTALLY unrelated to what people are searching for, they are not going to go search elsewhere, and they are not going to stomp up and down and demand something be done about it.

PEOPLE ARE SELFISH. The average American wants what they want for themselves (and they often want it NOW!) and they don't care as much about monopolies and whatnot. Once upon a time they did. But not now. Not even close. As long as it doesn't impact them or become a big issue of their "rights", people just don't care. And they won't start caring anytime soon.

Take a look at Walmart for an example. They have LITERALLY destroyed 1000's of American businesses and produced a NET JOB LOSS over their rise to fame and fortune. It's not even close. They are, by far, one of the greediest corps in history and have done a lot more harm than good to middle class in America. Yet that is simply looked at as capitalism, period. It is what it is.

I like your attitude, bro. And I honestly agree with you. But I've been on this planet long enough to understand that this issue is not going to go anywhere with our do nothing, greedy, bought and freaking paid for Congress that serves at the feet of the plutocrats.

You're gonna need a LOT more people or a lot more money to have any impact. At this point in time and in this economy, I think it's in my best interest to focus ALL my energy and time on earning an honest living for me and my family. That means I will continue to focus on "using" Google or whatever company, in any way that I can (legally of course) to make money. They are using me and plenty of others. I'm just returning the favor.

If you get a serious petition/campaign together (or join one), by all means let me know and I'll be happy to email/write/call whomever with you. Until then, I gotta get back to work. bro.

I wish you well. Take care.

Politicians respond to either citizen outrage or special interests. Basically anything that gets them re-elected they are all ears for. It's a democracy and you should know how it works since you have an American flag as an avatar.

Regardless of the above, who is lobbying for you? Senior citizens have the AARP, gun owners have the NRA, etc. The list goes on. It's collective complaints that will bring Google's market dominance and control over e-commerce into question by lawmakers. Google has already sat through a number of Congressional hearings. How nice it would be to see Matt Cutts sitting in the hot seat for once. :)

While you may not like what I say, the truth is you shall never be heard if your mouth stays zippered shut. Freedom of speech is an American right earned by the blood of many. Don't disgrace it by displaying an American flag avatar and busting someones balls for reaching out to their representatives.

The first quarter lobbying expenditures of Google has more than doubled from the same period last year, but yet you prefer everyone to remain silent? Google is spending millions of dollars to get their views heard by those we elect, and this is not a time for us to remain silent. In fact, Google has spent more in the first quarter of this year then Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook combined. Their interests are being heard. Are yours?

Just checked my rankings today, my site got hit because of this sh*t. Had a half dozen keywords ranked #1 or #2, now the highest keyword I have is #7.

And my site is what you would consider an authority site; it has hundreds of pages indexed and serves an entire industry. And it has a *lot* of keyword diversity. So it looks as though they're not just targeting "thin sites" or sites that have "over optimized" for specific keywords.

Here's to hoping everyone sees their rankings bounce back.

You guys complaining are ridiculous. Adapt and overcome. If you are good at SEO, you should have seen this coming and already be ahead of the curve.

If things go viral, trust me, Google will be dead. People will spread this shit just within the days. Example dialogue of two mates:

"
-Hey Anthon, where to buy viagra?
-Search for it on the internet mate.
- Yeah, I will Google it.
- Bitch please, who uses Google now? Bing it!
"

It's all about going viral

A lot of people say use social media. What if your niche is cement brick molds? Still think there's a large audience for you on Facebook, Twitter, etc?

What will we call the facebook page?this needs to be done NOW while there is momentum.
What if everyone with the likes of scrapebox, xrumer etc uses their tools to point to google for posting,of course it won't post but it may affect their servers,or simply post to as many sites as poss using google as the website and keyword(it can't rank any higher!).

People have worked hard and this "update" has affected all types of link builders ,whitehat, blackhat and everything inbetween. However the real reason is the results are a joke.
Perhaps if the press pick up on it cutts will actually have to explain what the hell this update was actually designed to do and why so many innocent sites got taken out.

Yes, we should start right now. Don't call the page something like we are angry IMers who are pissed off by Google. It should be something that people will believe in and follow, that will be spread. + stay polite and make it look authoritative.

For those saying we should boycott and campaign against google, while it sounds far fetched I have actually started informing my FB friends of the screwy results.

While most people are lazy and self serving even if they cannot by inspired by corruption, greed, monopoly etc... they can be inspired by not getting what they want quickly and easily so I have gone that route pointing out some of the odd results so far and advising people to use Yahoo/Bing if they cannot find what they want.

Every voice counts and eventually if enough voices are heard Google will either conform or disappear.

Yep I'm with you. I have made Bing my default search and if I don't like what I see there I'll go to DuckDuckGo. I've got an ok social media presence and I am using it. Google needs to have it's untouchable powers stripped a bit and it will be better for everyone.

As to everyone saying Google is here to make money and not be your friend. Yes that is true. Only Google has been losing more money each quarter for the last 2 years. Investors have slowly been pulling out but because it's such a Juggernaut it hasn't been fully evacuated or filled with panic.

However the latest results SUCK from a user stand point and I believe with the coming rolling updates, adsense will end up with its worst quarter in the last decaded in the 3q if significant roll backs aren't made.

Either Matt Cutts really knows what he is doing and this whole ship is going to be amazing when it's done or he is likely to be fired or significantly stripped of power before the end of the year is up because the executive board will end up demanding it after a massive loss of profits following 2 years of losses.

Someone who has experience in creating fancy and authoritative FB pages, please create it so we can start viral campaign.

And change your default search engine to Bing, tell your friends, family, relatives to switch their SE to Bing and convince them that Google sucks now and Bing is a lot better. If you ever install OS on your friends or relatives PCs, change default SE to Bing.

It seems to me the EMD's are completely wiped off the map for my niches, this includes my sites and my competitors. Gone.

I lost a couple of EMD's no dirty links either, absolutely senseless.Still let's start taking action.

There are currently 6291 users online on BHW. (and millions of pissed off site owners who aren't members of BHW who lost their traffic while being authority and provide helpful content to visitors).

And you tell me we aren't stronger than Google?
