Any kind of link developed with intention to improve raking is not white hat.Only white hat thing you can do is to do link-bait.
You become either so awesome or controversial that people will link to you without you asking them to do so.

Anyway,for general purposes people do consider/confuse manual link buliding as white hat.

What is truly white hat?

Making a site with high quality articles, reclining in your chair, and saying, "And now we play the waiting game, heh heh heh".

(And then, months later, wondering why your site has received 0 visits).

Really, then how in the heck did I have 2500 people come to my white hat site yesterday in the computer repair niche with PR5 main page and PR4 internal pages, hitting Google spot 1 for 100 + long tail keywords?

I am beating:

pctechbytes.net, 9 year old domain with over 1 million links.
Youtube.com video 7 years old domain 18 billion links.
datadoctors.com 13 year old doamin with 74,000 links.

How the hell did I even get a PR5 white hat site with less than 2500 links total if what you say is true?

Its a lot like when you meet an asshole, you can't really sit down and define exactly why they are a asshole, but you can tell they are one.

In Google's ideal world aka LaLa Land, other webmasters will automatically link to your site because your site is just that freakin' kick ass awesome.

The problem is man invented tools, it started with the rock and it continues with senuke, scrapebox, and the whole lot.

These tools worked, and very well.

Now if you want to compete you've got to play hardball. Why is the webmaster of a PR5 site going to link to your site "just because" when they can sell that same link and make some decent $$?

Seriously. I get nausea listening to the ultra-moral White hatters sing their tune of compliance to Google's every want all the while when they aren't preaching internet ethics blasting away and SENuke and SB while telling n00bies how they've got to do it the hard way for it to count.

Basically white hat seo = SEO techniques that are allowable within Google TOS and the TOS of other search engines

Blackhat= SEO practices that some may view as "unethical" that are in opposition to the TOS expectations Google has for it's millions of webmasters regarding their search rank.

Alot of people click thanks, and lick up to senior members on here, but meathead is making a damn big point you'd want to listen too.

Your not an expert in SEO, and shouldn't try to be a professional at SEO if your asking questions like this... your setting yourself up for disaster! Myself and meathead are telling you this in a kind way...

Regarding what your saying about links... use comment links and anything spammy on tier 2-3 never at your money site.

Steer clear of anything pharma, porn etc related if your running a weight loss site for example because you've just become one big blip on the radar.

Stick to the usual web 2.0's , and diversify. Alot of these High PR networks are being raided right now also by google, so don't have all your links in one basket... spread yourself. And make sure your anchors are very different.

That's summarising things lightly, study what's working on here closely and avoid getting links from any "frowned upon niches" they will only hurt your sites.

I just thought i'd thank you for putting this guy straight as people like myself could hand over hard earned dollars to amateurs like this with out knowing, im trying to learn SEO as i simply cannot afford to pay someone to do it but imagine my disapointment if i did put money aside for it and it went straight to an amateur that didnt help in anyway?

I'm guessing you didn't bother to read the part where I listed my ranking experience... I have ranked every site i have worked on to page 1 and multiple #1 rankings. This is simply a post to get some ideas on making the process as clean and googleproof as possible. Just because it works doesn't mean it will continue to work.

To say I don't know SEO is misinformed and inaccurate. To insinuate that just because someone asks a question on a forum, they don't already know the answer to it is naive. Continuous learning and leveraging the experience of others is the key to remaining ahead of the game. Especially the SEO game.

Me too. My common exchanges with hardcore White hatters often go something like this:


Sanctimonious prick: So, what did you do today?

Me: I submitted my link to 500 bookmarking sites using software.

Sanctimonious prick: WHAT!? Are you aware that such link building is black hat?

Me: Well, what did you do today?

Sanctimonious prick: .... Well, I submitted my link to 500 bookmarking sites...

... But it was by hand!

Me: So, you also built links artificially to increase your site rank?

If you want to go whitehat with "a little bit" of (secret) grey/black hat just to help people see your AWESOME site, you can:

a. submit articles to directories (AMR can do this well but make sure the spin quality is high and unique is also high)

b. create social bookmarks (high quality ones)

c. guest blog

I know these methods are GH/BH but they are the safest IMHO.

My little theory I always go by is every site that pops up on the web is Black Hat until Google comes in and manually review your site. Once your site is making noise on the web Google manual team comes in and chooses to place you a "White Hat symbol" on their internal system thus giving you "White Hat status". I have many sites I owned years ago that were manually reviewed and they are still ranking sitting dormant without any major updates. I think this was a little too much info but hey sharing is caring =)
