Client wants to pay me $7000 - need advice.

No don't do it. Just walk away.

I bet they will call you back anyway, and if they don't you might as well find some new clients that aren't assholes.

7000 is tempting, but its like swapping your soul for that lol.

Guys this is a forum not a board meeting, lighten up, that was clearly a joke.

Take the money! Whats to say that they will go out business in 2 years. You can buy 1400 fiver services for that. 2 years from now the seo landscape is going to be different. So in 2 years get another 7k!

I think you're missing the point of "$7k for life" not "$7k with the hope of the business failing within two years or forcing them to pay another $7k."

If you do NOT go along with his deal, he may drop you and find or use the other guy....

$7,000 and dental

Accept the offer, but then add a stipulation that each year there is a nominal fee of $500 to do all the necessary checks / setups basically blag it.

As that $500 should cover the cost of the SEO for the year anyway, this way you just bank $7k. And as soon as they dont pay the $500 then their contract is nulled

No, nothing is certain with Big G - you are taking a risk for peanuts mate

Just refuse..

meathead1234: that's actually a very good suggestion, thank you. :)

Amsterdammer: that is a new revelation to me, well done, thank you, I will present both of these links to them when I go meet them on the 27th.

poweronics: yeah, this is an odd one, but check out Amsterdammer post, that company apparently does.

For those of you saying walk away: even though the keywords are on page and and are easy to rank/keep them there, you still don't mind walking away from 7K CASH? :)

lifetime of what? your lifetime? lifetime of the site? lifetime of some search engine? what search engine...

Go to a lawyer and define lifetime with an expiration date!

and come back....

lifetime doesn't have a meaning

A lifetime of inflation will make that 7k worthless.

depends on what they mean by 'lifetime'.. ,the company could go bankrupt in 2 months, then it's a good deal...
Will you be signing any contracts?

You can always dip out on them if you're that type of person, but other than that I probably wouldn't do it... unless your life is really worth that little to you!

Get the whole money package first, I believe this dentist won't even remember about his website in 1 year, he will be busy with his clients and love-makers

They told me to get back to them with my answer on March 27th or they may consider finding someone else who will take them up on their offer.

Question for you is: what do you guys think? What should I do, take the 7K CASH and work on their SEO for a life time? lol. Is that too much risk and responsibility?

First time being in this position, has anyone been in this position? I didn't know some companies would charge this way.

Advice, suggestions, any words of wisdom will be helpful. :)

Sounds like the client has some control over you in this situation.... Take $7k for life or lose $300 a month. First let the $300 go if you have to, they are just trying to pressure you into making the deal to become their SEO slave because they know you are afraid of losing the $300 a month.

What you need to have in place is some sort of contract. I only write up 12 month contracts for SEO and explain to the customer the long-term value in the service. Also I would fire back with what other companies charge for SEO and how great a deal they are getting for only $300 a month.

Call their bluff man they have already revealed their hand by telling you they want you for life, they will not cancel!

Say something like I am sorry I can not make that deal and that's okay if you want to discontinue your service with me, I am sure I will be able to find another dentist that will sign up for $500 or $600 if you decide you want to cancel with me. I actually think that the $300 I am charging you was under priced.

Also you could tell them this....

(You) Are you happy with the service that I am providing you??
(Client) Yes
(You) Then I have an even better offer for you! If you send me a couple of referrals then I will discount your monthly service fee by 20% of what each new client signs up for.

Then say you have other clients that get their service from you for free because they referred a couple of their friends. Tell him if he has one referral that signs up for $1500 a month then he will get his service for free!

(You) Free sounds even better than 7K right?
(Client) Yes
(You) Then think of how much more money you will have getting your service for free plus all of the extra business that I am going to send you!

I think that you should definitely bring up the referral deal to him, and when you do it make sure that you are excited when you do it, this will get him excited too and you will make the best of this situation by obtaining a few more new clients and you won't have to worry about any more ridiculous offers from your current client.

I would genuinely tell them of course you can do it. If you are already doing SEO work for them and are ranking decent (I'm talking top three pages which you should definitely be in), it won't require as much work to be done in the long run. I'm not saying stop doing work after a while or taper off, I'm saying that naturally you won't have to do as much work as you would just starting out because the SEO becomes natural as the business facebook page, twitter, website, list, etc. grows.

There are so many factors that go into the decision such as area, business size, company image, rankings already, web 2.0 in place, previous work done, and just so much more. Contact me on Skype or shoot me a PM and I'll walk you through it.

It will void the contract, but you don't keep the money anyway due to bankruptcy laws.

Poor choice... not even minding the moral issues.

True. However you do keep the money if it's already spent.

You have to be broke to come out of bankruptcy well. And you have to stay broke for 3 or 4 months or until the bankruptcy is finished.

For the lifetime of Who or what? Your life, his life, the Website's life?

I have just finished writing about "lifetime warranties" for the home improvement business and my research revealed they aren't worth the paper they are written on.

If you take it, have a few clauses in there.
