Client wants to pay me $7000 - need advice.

7k??
looks like that guy is paying for only 2 yr of your work.
And if I were you then "NO", not life time at all.
Rather do it for few years like 5 years or 7 years but not lifetime.

I am very curious how this turned out.
Any updates?
Sorry folks, I have not forgotten this thread and your thoughtful and wonderful suggestions :), just been very busy.

I gave them my proposal based on a number of suggestions here, the proposal was:

7K Cash for 3 years of SEO services. I gave them 10 days as well to think it over, still waiting for their response... and so the waiting game continues.

Still less than $200 per month, but better than lifetime! :p

Thanks. :)
I am very interested in how this enfolds.

7000 k forever? this does not seem reasonable. how bout this, your rate is $300. Would you be willing to work for $200 a month? say you take the 7k upfront and offer a discount and work for $200 a month?

it depends on your situation, but i would not lock myself in.

I looked at the profiles for some of the testimonials of Mastergoogle clients. It looks like they basically optimize the client website, do a few high PR blog comments and forum comments, then issue a unique press release every year for the client and that's about it. Just sharing my findings!

There's no way you can guarantee for certainty that they will be #1 for the life of their business.

Find out who their competitor is using and what the actual stipulation of the "lifetime" deal was.

I'm sure it's not as iron-clad as "you must keep us #1 forever".

listen to this, honestly once the SEO is up n site is running on the first page it shouldn't be a big hassle take the money because u never know when you will need it .. 7k 1 time is good just do it

Received some PMs, so here is an update: Dentist or rather his wife a.k.a office manager weren't kidding when they said "lifetime". They said they never wanted to pay for SEO ever again, despite a very long and detailed proposal with explanations. So, I walked, they certainly have been one of those odd few weird cheap clients. Not worth the hassle.

I would like to thank everyone for your wisdom and contibutions to this thread. Many thanks :)

I would pass as well. SEO on a large business site can be charged up to $500 month (sometimes way more). At this rate you fall into the "slave" category in 14 months! Not worth it.

i agree with you mate

make price rational

thanks

I wouldn't accept such a deal. A better deal would be a retainer fee, in which the company pays you every month and can call on you when they need you.

Deny the offer simply, i know 7k cash sounds cool but when it's comes to work for SEO that will trouble you later.

Don't do lifetime, $7,000 is 24 months of profit for you; tell him it's something you cannot offer because the industry is constantly changing, there are factors such as inflation and cost of living that have to be taken into account.

Or...

Take the money and fake your own death ;P

That's a ridiculous request.. I agree with the guy who suggested you ask for lifetime dental coverage :P

i would trade dental care for SEO while he does your dental you do his SEO when he stops you stop

seriously, if a dentist, who presumably is an educated man, is that dumb, of course take the $7k... How in the world could one define "life" in such a contract, not to mention the intricacies of contract wording (for performance/contingencies). At the end of the day, the two scenarios are either 1/ you take the $7k for cash flow and grow your business... later on down the track if you are still in business, this client might be a pain in the ass because he is now costing you $$$, but because you are now successful, you can wear that cost more easily and you can put it down to a learning curve AND receiving much needed upfront capital... OR 2/ you go out of business eventually because you cant get clients etc, still have the $7k (you probably would have spent it by then) and there is nothing the dentist can do about it. It's called business risk... every creditor relationship assumes this risk... TAKE IT, although once you are established/successful you may think differently about such offers.

$7000 for lifetime. Tell them the reality and even then if they do not give a realistic offer, move to next customer.
